Easy September Crafts for Toddlers and Preschoolers

I honestly think that fall crafts might be my absolute favorite. There are so many fun themes and topics to explore with your child and the change in season is a natural excuse to look at the world around us and be inspired by it.

Before Halloween and Christmas activities start taking over, these September crafts are a great excuse to slow down and do something creative together inspired by the natural world.

As with all activities with toddlers you will of course need to supervise your toddler for the duration of the activity especially where there are small pieces such as googly eyes, pom poms or buttons involved. In this post you’ll find quite a few crafts that use natural materials which are not only a great excuse to get outdoors to look for materials but are also really budget friendly too.

Lots of these fun September themed crafts for toddlers and preschoolers would be ideal to try at home or in early years settings too and you’ll notice that lots of them are ones that I did at home with my own children when they were that age so you can see that they really have been tried and tested! To get the tutorial for each craft just click on the title of it.

We have loads of free templates which are perfect for crafting with toddlers and preschoolers. You can use them as a starting point for easy art and craft ideas or they make perfect coloring sheets too.

These are some which I think would be great for September crafts including those which I’ve used in the crafts below.

Apples

Apple crafts are a great way to support healthy eating themes as well as showing the change in season. These easy apple crafts and activities would also pair nicely with eating some apples for a snack!

Apple Painting Craft

Printing with apples is a bit of a classic craft and one that I’m sure that I did at preschool too!

Here we’ve used our apple template to create a fun picture painted with real apples.

Apple Suncatchers

I made these apple suncatchers with my daughter when she was three years old so I can happily confirm that they’re a fun and easy craft for kids this age and they’re ideal for displaying afterwards.

The cellophane is easy for younger kids to cut making this a great way to practice scissor skills, while creating the suncatchers can also help support fine motor skills.

Pom Pom Apple Tree Craft

This craft is another one that I made with my daughter when she was two years old and one of the things I really liked about it was it doesn’t really matter where your child glues their pom pom apples, after all you would normally find apples falling from the tree or on the ground too.

As it uses pom poms this is obviously an activity where you will really need to make sure that you are supervising but it was a craft that she really enjoyed and it’s a fun way to support fine motor skills.

If you like the idea of this apple tree craft but don’t want to do the prep work that I did you could use our tree template and draw an outline around it for the leaves or just draw a simple tree outline onto some cardstock.

Paper Plate Apples

This is another easy craft that both my kids enjoyed making and using pom poms as an alternative to paintbrushes made it a fun way to get creative.

Leaves

Leaf crafts are one of the most popular themes for fall crafts and the changing colors are a great way to encourage an interest in the natural world.

Fall Tree Craft

This easy craft uses real leaves and is a great excuse to get outside while you look for natural craft materials together.

Fall Leaf Suncatchers

This craft has been so popular over the years both with my children originally as the finished craft stayed up in the windows for months, and with the many people who’ve made this easy fall craft with their kids too.

It’s a great way to celebrate the change in seasons, is an easy way to practice scissor skills, supports fine motor skills and is a good excuse to explore color mixing with your child, definitely a fall favorite for us.

Fall Tree Sticky Wall Craft

This fall tree activity is one that I devised and set up in ten minutes before I had to collect my son from preschool and not only was it a fun hands-on craft for him to create but it made the walk home a lot more enjoyable as he collected leaves to use for this activity.

Fall Tree Painting Ideas

Use our tree template to try out four different ways to paint fall leaves, all using basic materials that you probably already have at home.

This activity is a great way to look at color mixing and using process art to create some gorgeous fall trees.

Scarecrow

Scarecrow crafts are a classic for September and Fall generally. These simple ideas use basic materials like paper plates and paper bags to inspire younger kids.

Paper Plate Scarecrow Craft

Use our template to make this simple paper plate craft. Kids can design a background for their picture and could draw on the scarecrow’s face too.

Harvest Basket Craft

Use our printable template to make this cute harvest basket with a scarecrow and sunflowers on it.

Scarecrow Paper Bag Craft

This simple paper bag craft was inspired by the book The Scarecrow’s Wedding by Julia Donaldson but could be easily adapted by encouraging kids to create their own design.

Strips of cut paper are a great way to make the scarecrows hair and you can use marker pens to make their faces before using the finishedĀ  craft for pretend play.

Vegetable Dot Marker Printables

As you’ll know the job of scarecrows is to protect the growing harvest and these vegetable themed dot art markers would be a great extension activity with broccoli, sweetcorn, avocado and carrot designs.

Acorns

Celebrate the arrival of fall with these easy acorn crafts for toddlers and preschoolers inspired by nature.

Rolling Acorn Art

Create some fun process art using our free template and real acorns.

Build An Acorn Craft

While the scissor skills for this craft may be a bit too advanced for younger kids, toddlers and preschoolers can definitely color in the different parts of the acorn for this cut and paste craft and can help to stick them together.

Acorn Collage

Collages areĀ  a great way to get through any unused craft supplies and they’re a fun, hands-on way for children to craft with mixed materials too.

Use our printable template and craft materials such as tissue paper, corrugated card, shredded paper, yarn, feathers, leaves and construction paper.
