Weather Art Projects

Over the years I’ve shared loads of weather activities so I though it would be a good idea to put all of our weather art in one place along with some projects from other bloggers.

I’ve trawled through the internet to find the best ideas so that you don’t have to!

In this round up you’ll find ideas suitable for kids of all ages from toddlers, preschoolers and kids in pre-k to ideas suitable for older children to make.

All you need to do is take a look through the list below and find the ones which are most suited to your child’s age, abilities and interests.

Free Weather Templates

On this site you’ll find a lot of free templates and printables to help you get creative with your child without having to spend a fortune.

We’ve shared loads of weather templates that you can use to color or try out some craft or art ideas with and with each printable I’ve also shared some simple ideas to get you started.

Weather Art Ideas

1. Paper Plate Sun

This cute paper plate sun craft was a collaborative art project made by my kids when they were younger with a little help from me!

My toddler painted the paper plate while my son who was a few years older did the handprints.

2. Rain Art

If you haven’t tried painting with rain before then I’d highly recommend giving it a try, it’s a really easy and fun idea that’s suitable for kids of all ages.

For our rain art we used our umbrella template but there are plenty of other ones such as the wellington boots or rain cloud that would work really well too.

All you need to do is wait for a rainy day!

3. Paper Plate Snowflakes

These paper plate snowflakes are a great art idea for toddlers and preschoolers who have a tendency to drench any craft project in paint or glue as the stronger paper plates stop your snowflakes from getting too saturated.

I made this with my kids when they were young and while you will need to do the cutting out for them (the paper plates make it harder to use scissors) it’s also a great way to use up any supplies that you might have in the back of your craft or art box.

4. Rain Clouds

We love any art project that allows you to be hands on and this rain craft for kids means that you can either use pom poms or q-tips to create the rain itself or if you don’t mind messy hands then why not try finger painting instead.

5. Rainbow Art

As much as creating using paint is great fun, it can also be a blast to give it a try using something other than a traditional paintbrush.

For this rainbow art idea we’ve painted using lego bricks but you could also try using different materials like feathers or toothbrushes dipped in paint to create your rainbows.

6. Thundercloud Art

This thundercloud art project has to be one of my favourite weather crafts because it’s super effective but it’s easy peasy to make as well.

If you’ve ever made a paint splat painting before then you’ll be able to create this one and its simplicity makes it a great one for younger children to make too.

If you want to add some raindrops to your storm you could do so by using marker pens to draw them in underneath or using paints or finger painting.

7. Pom Pom Painted Snowflake

We’ve shared a lot of ideas for snowflake crafts but this pom pom art using our template is one that’s super popular every winter.

8. Puffy Paint Clouds

I absolutely adore this hands-on idea from No Time for Flash Cards who shares a tutorial for making fun puffy paint clouds using shaving cream.

9. Snowman Art

I don’t know about your kids but if we’re lucky enough to have snow here then one of the things my kids will rush to do is make a snowman!

This pom pom painted snowman is super easy to make, older kids will be able to do any cutting while if any of the painting goes outside of the snowman when young children make it then I just see this as another snowflake falling from the sky or a bit of a snowdrift.

10. Wind Painting

This wind painting idea from The Keeper of The Memories is a great way to try out some process art with your kids as well as it being a great addition to a weather unit or topic as well.

11. Resist Art

Resist art is one of my favorite techniques to use and it’s one that you could use for a number of different types of weather too.

Here I’ve used it to make some snowman art but you could swap the template out for one of those I’ve shared above and use the same process to make a sun, snowflake or raincloud.

12. Umbrella Paper Plate Craft

Again this is an activity that I did with my kids when they were in preschool and the early years of school.

These paper plate umbrellas are a pretty easy art activity to set up and getting all the paints out means that they can show some creativity in designing and decorating their umbrella.

13. Potato Masher Rainbow

Using big materials to paint and stamp with is great for little hands.

This potato masher rainbow art is an activity that I did with my daughter when she was two years old and we both had a blast!

It’s also a great excuse to look at different colors with your child and discuss color mixing too – what happens when the blue and yellow paints get mixed up?

14. Bubble Wrap Cloud

Follow Red Ted Art’s and make a cute cloud using painted bubble wrap complete with some bubble wrap raindrops underneath.

15. Paint With Sunscreen

This sunscreen painting idea from Team Cartwright is so good, not only do you get to make some fun art with your child but you get to teach them the importance of wearing sunscreen too.

It’s a great STEAM project and a really cool way to make learning fun too.

16. Black Glue Sun

Black glue is a really fun art material to try out and this black glue sun art from Taming Little Monsters looks fantastic.

17. Snow Painting

I wish that we got enough snow where we live to try out this idea for painting snow using water balloons from Fun-A-Day because it looks absolutely amazing!

As well as being a really fun way to try out process art it’s a great excuse to do some messy play and I think that this is one activity your kids won’t forget in a hurry.

18. Stormy Weather Painting

I love it when an activity is inspired by a book and this stormy weather painting idea from a Little Pinch of Perfect takes inspiration from the book Thunder Cake.

19. Weather Suncatchers

Use chalk pens and recycled materials to make these weather stained glass suncatchers, they look great when the sunshine pours through them.

20. Rainbow Lightning

An art project that combines rainbows and lightning? Obviously we’re going to love this art idea!

This process art idea from Taming Little Monsters looks gorgeous as well as being lots of fun to create too.

21. Wind Art

Use printmaking to create this fantastic wind art STEAM project from Innovation Kids Lab.
