We love sharing fun crafts for toddlers and this simple handprint paper plate sun craft is in fact the first craft that my daughter was involved in for this blog – even though she was only one she was determined to join in too!
This easy paper plate craft is simple to make, we’ve done it as a collaborative activity which would make it fun if you had a group of kids but it can easily be done with one child on their own making a really sweet keepsake.

There are two aspects to this activity that I really liked. Firstly, as my daughter is only 16 months old it became a bit of a collaborative art project between me, my daughter and my son, which also means that secondly, it’s actually really adaptable for different ages and abilities.
I love this paper plate sun so much as it’s so cheerful and there are loads of other brilliant sun crafts for kids out there so at the end of this post you’ll find some more sweet sun crafts for kids from some of my other favourite craft bloggers.

How to make your paper plate sun
I let my daughter slap the paint all over the plate, moving the plate around occasionally for her, she was much better than I’d expected! I should add that I totally wasn’t prepared for her to do painting so no apron, only four baby wipes in the house and being very thankful that my table and chairs are pretty easy to clean.
I obviously flunked at getting a picture of her painting it, however I did manage to grab a shot of her painting my tablecloth and the white board I use for taking blog photos. Feel free to learn from my mistakes!
To make the suns rays I’d planned on using her handprints but she totally wasn’t up for that and it’s kinda hard to reason with someone that doesn’t talk yet. Instead my son stepped in and asked what I was doing so we drew around his hand instead.
I used this for a template to cut the other sun rays out and these were then stuck around the plate. The happy face is my addition!
Ways you could adapt this craft:
- Use painted handprints rather than cut out
- Older children could practice their scissor skills by cutting out the hand templates
- Ask your kids to draw the suns face
- This could also be done as a group handprint craft with all the kids in preschool etc doing a handprint each.
