Upcycled messenger bag tutorial

Updated on 9th January 2019 by Kate Williams | 12 Comments

Hello! I love upcycled stuff, mainly ummm, because I am a bit tight but also because I hate throwing stuff away (starts slight rant about landfill…) Vicky’s blog Vicky Myers Creations is one that I love because she is so passionate about using her sewing skills to create something new and gorgeous out of something that would otherwise be forgotten. I hope you love the tutorial she’s done for me today, do comment and let me know! And of course do check out her blog too and don’t forget to follow Vicky on twitter and on Pinterest too!

Hi, my name is Vicky – I am delighted to have this opportunity to guest blog for Kate. For the last 18 months I have been creating bags out of former clothes. I love the challenge of creating something new out of something old, responding to the fabric to see what I can create.

The ‘Valuing our clothes’ report from Wrap includes news that around 350,000 tonnes (31%) of used clothing out of a total of 1.13 million tonnes are sent to landfill. There are so many different uses for used clothing, reusing as clothing, recreating into new items – even actions as simple as your household cloths being used as, using as packaging.

Recently I was faced with the challenge of making a mans bag. My man is not a bag man, and my dad carries a Travel Men’s Leather Wrist Bag so no help there! The most popular mans bag seems to be a leather satchel/messenger bag, used in the work environment.

My customer liked my idea of creating a bag out of a man’s jacket, using the front collar for interest. I used his former messenger bag for measurements, utilised the strap, and raided my fabric stash (this included a great quality jacket and a work shirt).

How to make a dribble bib

Updated on 21st February 2020 by Kate Williams | 9 Comments

After realising with my first child quite how long teething lasted, by the time I was pregnant with my second I thought it would be sensible to work out how to make dribble bibs! I like an easy craft project and as these simple dribble bibs are so useful to have on hand it seemed silly not to give it a try. Of course, there is nothing wrong at all with just buying everything, but this dribble bib was so stupidly quick and easy to make it seemed almost silly not to do it. Plus you get to use a hammer on a sewing project, which is always a good thing. And you get to look like one of those mums who is On Top Of Everything which is always a bonus!

How to take your own pregnancy photos

Updated on 21st February 2020 by Kate Williams | 16 Comments

how to take your own pregnancy photosTaking pictures of my (ever expanding) bump wasn’t something I really planned on doing until recently. There are no pictures of me pregnant with The Toddler. Well, ok, I’ve found one, but it’s at about 14 weeks and I just look a bit like I’ve had dinner. I’m not super self conscious about my body, but I think that, like a lot of people, the idea of a lens concentrating on my stomach makes me feel like perhaps I shouldn’t have eaten that third penguin before lunch today.

Then the other day I was reading the ‘wish I took pictures like that’ blog Capture by Lucy and I noticed that she had a section on pregnancy photography and I thought, well, why not? I’m not overly planning on doing this again so it might be nice to have something to look back on. It’s not like I have to put them up in my front room. Although I umm… appear to be publishing them on my blog so strangers can look at my belly. Once again I fail to have thought this through properly, eh?! …

DIY Kids Moustache Tshirt

Updated on 24th October 2014 by Kate Williams | 17 Comments

moustache diy kids tshirtDo you find that your child has a couple of tops that they wear again and again? I’m having one of those weeks where I’m sick of getting the same clothes out every day for The Toddler, yet at the same time I’m kinda bored with the other stuff he owns too. Not good, huh?

I don’t really like throwing kids clothes out, because they are hideously expensive (seriously? how can a kids t shirt cost nearly as much as mine?!) so the options for when I’m bored are pretty much a) get on with life and ignore that my child is in the same top every day for 6 months b) upcycle one of their old boring ones to make something new and funky. In this case, umm… the top was a bit of a mess too and I thought that a new print would help hide some stains!

Stags Head Cushion Tutorial

Updated on 11th March 2021 by Kate Williams | 15 Comments

stag cushion diy (1)I know, I’m having somewhat of a sewing renaissance here at the moment. The idea for this stags head cushion tutorial came to me the other day and I knew straight away that I had to make it!

You can view this tutorial in one of two ways, if you follow just the instructions fom making an envelope cushion and ignore all the stag bits then I promise, even as a beginner you can get this done in under an hour. The instructions come from what I learnt at The Make It Room the other week and my first attempt was done in no time at all. If you want to do the stag too it will probably take you about an hour and a half. I did mean to time it but…umm…I met up with the family and had lunch in the middle so kinda forgot. Sorry about that. The instructions are as follows….
