There are three different designs available in the PDF file. A basic outline with legs and antennas, a more detailed version including the caterpillars face and a final version with more details on the body.
Caterpillar Life Cycle
Learning about a caterpillars lifecycle is often something that comes up in kindergartens and the early years at school where kids learn about the natural world.
My favorite and most simple resource for this has to be The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle which I bet most of us have read. (We have lots of The Very Hungry Caterpillar activities too!)
There are four different stages to the caterpillar or butterfly life cycle, starting from eggs tiny caterpillars (larva) are born.
When the caterpillar has eaten enough it will form a chrysalis where it will develop into a butterfly.
Caterpillar Craft Ideas and Activities
Coloring
Coloring is normally really popular with both kids and adults as it’s something that kids enjoy but it’s also really easy and quick to prep.
All you need to do is print out your caterpillar template onto white paper and choose your favorite crayons, markers or coloring pencils and you’re ready to get started.
Pom Pom Painting
I love pom pom painting as it creates a really nice texture on your artwork, plus it’s fun to paint without a paint brush!
Simply pour a little bit of paint onto a plate of tray so that you access it easily and then dab a pom pom into it before dabbing it onto your caterpillar’s body and face to color it in.
If you don’t like the feel of paint you can always use a clothes peg to hold the pom pom instead. Use a black marker for your caterpillar’s eyes once the paint is dry.
Mosaic
Making mosaics is an easy craft but they’re great for both practice using scissors and for fine motor skills as your child sticks down the small pieces of paper onto their picture.
Use a glue stick to cover your caterpillar and then glue shapes onto it. This can be a good activity to discuss colors and shapes and it’s also a great way to use up any spare paper, cardstock or construction paper that you have.
Torn Paper
Similar to making mosaics this paper caterpillar craft is really easy to make and a great way to use up old craft supplies, especially if you have any shades of green paper in your stash!
Simply tear the paper into pieces of different sizes and then glue them on to your caterpillar to color it in.
Fill Your Caterpillar With Food
If you’ve been reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar then you’ll know that caterpillars like to eat!
You could draw some of the foods from the book in each part of the caterpillars body or look for the foods in magazines to cut out and stick on.
More Spring Themed Templates
Our free templates are great for coloring, painting and crafts and we’ve got over 100 so no matter what you’re interested in we should have something to help you!
The templates that I’m sharing here are all ones that I think would fit in well with the themes of spring, gardening, bugs and insects, starting of course with this butterfly template which we’ve used for lots of fun activities so you can make a beautiful butterfly of your own.
It would also be ideal for learning about the butterfly life cycle or you could laminate it and design your own pattern for the wings using play dough for a super easy way to encourage creativity.
Our frog template is great for learning about life cycles too and there are two different designs so you can try out some different craft ideas.
Finally I love this simple watering can template which would look great colored for part of a spring bulletin board display.
