We love sharing sensory play ideas for kids and been doing a lot of sensory activities with flowers in the last couple of weeks at my daughter’s insistence, I think we’re just both very pleased to see some decent weather arrive and some flowers along with it! This fresh flower playdough only takes a couple of minutes to make and is a fun and inexpensive way to keep the kids busy and happy so it’s great if you need activities for toddlers but it’s still good fun for older kids too. Hunting for the flowers in the dough gives kids a different kind of way to play with playdough, of course you could get the normal cutters and so on out, but we enjoyed hunting for the hidden gems inside it and umm… making cups of floral playdough tea.
Crafts for kids
Three Ingredient Wildflower Goop
You know those days, the ones where you can’t face playing Batman / play doh / Peppa any more? You really just can’t do it? Well yesterday was one of those days and I was in desperate need of some new activities for toddlers. I rummaged through my craft supplies, trying to think of something that wouldn’t end with us covered in paint and…nothing. So something new was called for. Thankfully while I was making an emergency cup of tea I fell upon one of the ingredients for goop, a quick expedition into garden and we have wild flower goop, the pretty version of messy play. And I worked out how to not get messy either, yes really, read on my friend….
Flower Garden Sticky Wall
My daughter had so much fun today with this flower garden sticky wall that I had to get the laptop out and type it up as soon as she’d fallen asleep. My kids love sensory play ideas and I do too, it’s so nice to work out some activities for toddlers that have no mess at all, bliss! This activity is great for toddlers and younger kids as there’s loads of learning in it for them, but older kids will enjoy the chance to make something pretty with a different kind of canvas.
A Quick Lightsaber DIY
Yesterday my son came home from school with a challenge. He didn’t see it as a challenge of course, to him it was a reasonable request – tucked away in his school bag was a stick. ‘Mummy, I want to make a lightsaber’. Of course. This was given the added bonus that I’d spent the last three days ill on the sofa unable to do anything, but as everyone knows all mums are secret magicians and if your child turns to you and expects you to be able to turn a stick into a lightsaber then some how you need to be able to make that so. This is a properly quick lightsaber diy, not the kind of nature craft that makes you ooh and want to be a hippy mum but the kind of real, achievable diy that you can do with your kids, even from your sick bed, and your kids are happy with the results. I guess that’s what crafting is round here after all.
So this is what we did, I dragged my sorry self out into the garden to look for another stick for the youngest (because otherwise hell would break out) and then the kids chose what colour they wanted their lightsabers to be. Red for the eldest while the little broke hers in half and decided that she wanted blue and yellow. Not super Star Wars-ish but if anyone’s on the Dark Side it’s her and we know better than to argue about these things.
We made our lightsabers by wrapping the sticks in electrical tape, you can pick up a pack of five or six colours in the pound shop normally. Although normally I’d like the idea of painting these or something a bit more nature craft-y I have to admit this was great as it means the colours were really strong and also meant that while I was ill I didn’t have to deal with two paint covered children. Bonus.
Both kids were super pleased with their lightsabers and both of them actually wanted to pose with them for me to take photos of them for this post, and you know what? They were great pictures. Probably the best in-action ones I’ve taken of my kids for this blog. But my daughter’s clothes are covered in about 5 different kinds of soft fruit and my son was wearing his school uniform. Typical! So the pictures aren’t perfect but they did have loads of fun playing with these, not a bad craft to come up with when you’re at home ill!

With it being bank holiday weekend I was really looking forward to getting outdoors with the kids. But the weather report? Ugh. Typical British bank holiday. With my youngest a bit poorly I didn’t want to risk her getting worse so I needed to plan something fun for indoors, I didn’t want the weather to ruin our plans for green fingered fun though so between me and my son we came up with this plan to make some plant pots out of toys, don’t they look fun?! We were inspired after looking though Crops In Pots that I picked up last week in Waterstones and so not only are these planters fun, but they’re also a cool little way to get your kids involved in growing crops too!
