Split Pin Nutcracker Craft
When I was younger I loved watching the Nutcracker ballet at Christmas.
With characters like a King Rat it might not sound like the most obvious choice for a Christmas show for kids but once you’ve seen Clara and the Sugar Plum Fairy you understand why this show is a Christmas classic.
This year I’ve seen more and more nutcracker decorations in the stores and I think that this nutcracker craft would be a great one to make with your kids.
If you like this design you can also find it in our nutcracker template and build a nutcracker craft, both of which are free to download.
Craft Supplies Needed
- Nutcracker craft PDF printed onto white cardstock
- Coloring materials – markers or coloring pencils
- Split pins
- Plasticine / playdough
- Pencil
- Glue
- Scissors
How To Make Your Nutcracker Craft
Start by printing your template onto white cardstock or thick paper. While in theory you can use normal printer paper it’s far more at risk of tearing when you move your nutcracker’s limbs and no one wants that to happen.
Grab your coloring pencils or markers and color in all the parts of your nutcracker’s body as well as well as their drum, drumsticks and hat.
Carefully cut out all of the different parts using scissors and glue the head, hat and body together.
Next make the holes in your nutcracker for the split pins to go, you can see marks on the printable for where this should be.
To make the holes put your template piece onto a ball of playdough or plasticine and push the end of a sharp pencil through it. Remove the pencil and the hole is now ready to have a split pin pushed through it.
Insert the split pins into the arms and legs to connect them to the main body so that it looks the same as the illustration on the printable.
Glue the drum straps onto the back of the drum and fold the tops of the straps to hook over your nutcracker’s shoulders and glue these down.
Finally glue the drumsticks in his hands and your craft is finished and ready to play with.
