Looking for an easy squirrel craft you can make with your child?
This resist art craft is easy to do and our free squirrel template means that you don’t need to worry about being able to draw a squirrel yourself.
We’ve used a shower puff to make this effect but you can easily change it for whatever you have at home, sponges, foil and pom poms would also work well.

What You'll Find on This Page
Squirrel Craft
I love squirrels and this last week I’ve started finally seeing them in our back garden, I think the prospect of finding a few acorns has finally lured them in.
They’re a great animal for autumn and fall crafts and one that are pretty easily recognisable too.
Here in England we have grey squirrels so I’ve gone for a grey coloured card with a hint of brown to it – mainly because that’s what I could find, but if you have red squirrels where you live then this craft would look great changed to that colour card too.
Resist art is a process I really like and once you’ve got the hang of it it’s one that you can use again and again.
Of course you can find the full written tutorial for this craft below but if you’d like to get an idea of the basics (and I know I often need something visual) then I’ve linked the video for our resist art snowman to this page.
The end result is obviously different especially as I’ve used foil for that craft but the process itself is the same.
Free Squirrel Printable
We have two free squirrel templates available that you can download, one with a squirrel holding an acorn and the more basic one that I’ve used for this craft.
You can also print as many copies of them as you like so make sure to grab them for this activity.

Resist Art Squirrel Craft
Start by printing out your squirrel template and cutting out the squirrel shape.
Using your washi tape, make small loops of tape. The problem with using tape is that it is of course rather sticky but you don’t want it to stick to your card permanently or tear it when it’s removed.
For this reason before I stick it onto my template I normally touch it to hands, clothes etc a few times to remove a bit of the stickiness. Once you’ve done this tape your squirrel to your card.
Pour your paints onto a reusable plate – we have a specific one that’s just for crafting as it allows the paints to be accessed more easily.
Dab your shower puff into the paint and then dab it onto your picture making sure that you cover all the outside edges of your squirrel.
Carefully remove the squirrel template and your craft is done.
More Fall Crafts for Kids
The fall season is a great time for crafting with kids with lots of ideas to inspire you both.
Grab your glue stick, markers and paints and make this paper plate scarecrow craft which also uses one of our free templates. Your child could also design a face for their scarecrow.
These autumn leaf suncatchers are ones that my kids made and we had them displayed in our window for ages as they loved them so much.
This is a really easy craft that’s great for preschoolers and toddlers as it’s the perfect activity for teaching color mixing and scissor skills as well as the final craft looking great. Make sure you check out our tutorial for how to make them too!
If you’ve still got the paints out then this paint splat autumn tree craft is super easy for young children to make and is a great one for looking at all those pretty fall colours too.
