Chinese New Year Dragon Craft
My kids have always been really into celebrating Chinese New Year and with the opportunities to eat fantastic food and see dragon dances I can’t blame them.
With 2024 being the year of the dragon it’s the perfect opportunity to make some dragon crafts but with dragons being such a large part of the festivities I think this is a craft that you could make any year, especially as I’m sharing different options for the wording on this craft.
There are four choices for the front section of this craft and you can choose from ‘Chinese New Year’, Happy New Year’, ‘Year of the Dragon’ or a blank version without wording, just print the one that works best for you.
What are the Chinese Zodiac Animals?
The animals are, in order, rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.
Each animal has a different personality so it can be fun for you and your kids to learn about these and see how accurate they are for you!
If you’d like to learn more about the Chinese and Lunar New Year there’s a really good article on the Newsround section of the BBC showing how kids celebrate it.
Craft Supplies
- Chinese Dragon craft scene PDF
- White cardstock
- Coloring materials – coloring pencils, crayons or markers
- Scissors
- Double sided tape
How To Make Your Chinese New Year Craft
Start by printing your PDF onto white cardstock, you can use white paper for this craft if that’s all you have available but cardstock will help it to be much more sturdy.
You need to print a foreground, middle and background for your craft.
Color in each of the three pages using your coloring materials. It’s worth noting that when the craft is fully made you won’t be able to see all of the background page so don’t panic too much about getting the bottom part of that colored if you don’t want to.
Following the grey dotted lines on the printables cut away the gray sections and fold the tabs as indicated.
Follow the guidelines on the printable to join the three sections together using the tabs, attaching A1 to A2 etc.
You can use a glue stick for this but I tend to find that it can be a bit more likely to not stick properly so I’d recommend using double sided tape instead.
