With two small kids the amount of time I get to make things myself is pretty limited. Actually it’s pretty non-existent, so anything I do needs to be made in a matter of minutes or it just isn’t going to happen. Thankfully I’ve got a way to make cushion covers that really can be done super quickly so these really can be whipped up in no time. What’s more this cute material was designed by myself and that was super simple too!

How to make a cushion cover
- Cut your material to the right size. I used a 50cm x 50cm cushion for which I used fabric 130cm long and 120cm for a 40cm x 40 cm cushion. Keep the width of your fabric the same as the size of your cushion pad so that it will be nice and tight around your cushion pad, making a nice plump cushion.
- Iron your fabric. I know this is super dull and eats into your sewing time but trust me it will look a lot better for it.
- At the short end of each bit of fabric, fold the ends in twice and iron it down to hold in place, this is a quick little time saver that creates neat ends without you having to use pins! Sew down the ends of your fabric, making sure that you back-stitch at both ends.
Wrap your material around your cushion, with the pattern on the inside. It will fold over by quite a bit but this is to make sure that when you put your cushion pad in there’s no chance of it popping out! At one end pin down the material where you want it to be and then remove the cushion pad.
Sew this material in place, again making sure you back-stitch at both ends, then pin the other edge of your material into place and sew that too.- Turn your cushion cover inside out, so that your pattern is now on the outside, you might need to use a finger or a pencil to push the corners out properly.
- Squeeze your cushion pad into your cushion cover.
- Ta-da! All done
How to design and print your own fabric
You might remember a few weeks ago when I posted our seashell decorations that I’m currently decorating my son’s bedroom in a bit of a seaside theme! I designed the fabric for these cushions using the Zazzle where they have the option of designing your own fabric. I have to admit when I was first approached about this I was more than a little apprehensive – I’m no designer – but actually I was really surprised by how easy it was to do. I picked a couple of vintage images from The Graphics Fairy (and got my son’s approval on which ones he liked!) and then using Picmonkey’s collage function turned them into one jpeg.
After this all I had to do was upload my image to Zazzle and decide what material I wanted and how I wanted the pattern tiled. I chose one of their cottons and used a half brick tile for my images. As Zazzle is based in the US I thought it would take ages to arrive but it only took a few days which I thought was excellent, plus I now have a unique and super cute fabric for my son’s room that he loves too. It’s perfect for the reading corner in his room and he was so happy when he saw them, he adored that the pattern was his choice too!
