DIY Ombre Feathers

Updated on 9th November 2020 by Kate Williams | 10 Comments

I had an idea this morning that I’d like to make some ombre feathers. No reason why. I couldn’t even work out what I would do with them to be honest, but they were one of those things that you try out in a rush and then think damn! I’m going to put these babies on EVERYTHING!!

diy ombre feathersI’m totally obsessed with spray paint at the moment. Actually I think maybe I always have been, I used to spray things with car paint from Halfords in my youth before I realised that there was craft stuff available, I use this one from WIlkinsons. No idea what the difference is, maybe the car stuff is just shinier?? Either way in this case I had a bit of spray paint left over from another project so that’s what I used.

ombre decorations tutorialYou litterally just take your feathers outside (always get good ventilation when you’re spraying) and lay your feather on the floor. Aim the nozzle to shoot in one direction along the lengh of the feather and give it a couple of the tinyest, most gentle sprays ever. Imagine it’s being done by a spray painting fairie or something. If you spray too much all the bits of the feather will stick together and ugh, not nice.

spray painted ombre feathersIf you do get a couple of bits sticking together you can very gently tease them apart. Very gently though ok!

I’m now thinking of loads of things I could do with these. They’d make a fab garland like the feather garland I made previously, or they’d look great as a decoration on a present that’s been wrapped nicely. Maybe some ombre feathers would look pretty cool on a card too? Who knows. Either way I’m sure these aren’t frivolous at all, they’re super useful as far as I’m concerned!!

These are so pretty! You know what though? I think you should put some in your upcycled jam-jars – they would look great together! šŸ™‚

Just saw this. Creating a wedding dress with tulle and thinking about using this technique to ombre some feathers and add under the tulle layer of the skirt. (It’s a fall wedding and I’m trying to ‘create’ a fall colored gown with accents of deep red, orange, yellow, copper … all to make a stunning ‘one of a kind’ look. Wish me luck!!
