Ombre Chest of Drawers: Koppang Ikea Hack

A couple of weeks ago I was invited by Direct Blinds to renovate a piece of furniture and as you can imagine I didn’t need asking twice! I love changing things to make them look prettier and with the discovery of a stained Ikea chest of drawers I figured this would not only be a great opportunity to try my first Ikea hack but also to indulge my love of the spray paints and try to create an ombre chest of drawers.

Ombre Chest of Drawers TutorialThe original Ikea chest of drawers itself wasn’t too awful, I think its the Koppang? However it had an awful blue stain on the top that wouldn’t budge and besides which I fancied doing something a bit cheerier for my daughters room, after all, look at the misery fest it looked in there to begin with.

Sorry! To be honest I totally fancied the neon pink spray paint I saw but The Husband refused to allow it in the house. Tsk.

Due to a slight issue of kids refusing to nap I ended up spraying these in the garden while they had their dinner one evening, although my three year old did keep nipping over and begging to help. Strangely I didn’t let him.

painting an ombre chest of drawersThe handles were really easy to remove and then it was just a case of trying to do a layer of paint thick enough to hide the stain and change the colour of the drawers.

Things I learnt:

As always its always best to do two thin layers rather than one thick one.

Flies really like spray paint. They get their legs stuck to them and then you (ugh) need to remove them and repaint that bit.

Try to keep the spray can moving all the time.

Don’t spray when your neighbor is having a barbeque as bits of it will float into your garden and elevate your blood pressure.

I should also add that I bought newspaper and masking tape so I could do it all super neatly but I didn’t really need to use them and umm.. also I couldn’t be bothered with the prep. It’s all about the quick wins here!

What do you think? Does it look more cheerful?!

I love it and if you were being a real cheapskate like me you could just use paint and keep adding more white!

    Visiting from Tuesday Tutorials.

I think it looks incredible. Did you have to sand the drawers at all?
