Cloud cushion tutorial

Updated on 23rd October 2014 by Kate Williams | 30 Comments

Since I learnt how to make cushions myself I’ve been loathe to buy any in the shops (and if you don’t know how to make cushion covers, check out my tutorial here, it’s dead easy.) The other day I came across a cloud shaped cushion and I wondered if I could make one myself. A bit of faffing, a ponder over a glass of wine and ta-da! It was done, so I thought I would share this cloud cushion tutorial so you can make one too!

cloud cushion tutorial1. First things first, choose some cute material and iron it. I know. Sorry, but it will look better in the long term for it. I used half a meter of fabric.

diy cloud cushion2. Fold your material in half so you have the two sides to the cushion, make sure you have the boring side of your material on the outside as you will be turning it inside out later. Draw a cloud shape onto it. I did a practice first on a bit of paper, there’s no shame in that. I recommend making your curves as curvy as possible to avoid too much bunching. Cut it out and pin the edges together.

3. Sew around the edges leaving a ten centimeter gap. Make sure you back-stitch at the beginning and the end (ie do a few stitches backwards and forwards.)

5. Turn it inside out through the hole you left open and fill with toy stuffing.

6. Pin together the edges which have been left open and hand sew closed. Ta-Daaaah!

Cute huh? I’ve made two so far and they’re currently residing in my front room, although I think they’d look super cute in my daughters room.

Like this? Don’t forget to Pin It so you remember to make it later!!

I like the look of those. Had made one a lifetime ago. Perhaps it is time to revisit that part of me and make another one for the tot.

The cloud cushion is lovely but I have to say, I love the chair in the last photo! We’re shopping around for more chairs so they’re the things I’m noticing as they’re on my mind a lot lately!
