Paper Hedgehog Craft

19th September 2021 by Kate Williams | Leave a Comment

I promised myself that I wouldn’t make any more new crafts this week but then I thought of this paper hedgehog craft and honestly it was such a simple idea that I thought I had to share it.

It’s a really simple activity that you can use to help support scissor skills (without worksheet – hurray!) and it’s perfect for autumn too.

Paper Hedgehog Craft

This craft is a really easy one to set up, particularly if you choose to use our template.

With cutting, colouring and gluing there’s lots that children can do with this activity and it’s a great way for them to practice their scissor skills. Of course you could also do this craft with toddlers too, just do the cutting for them in advance and they can glue the spikes onto the hedgehogs back themselves.

Free Hedgehog Template

Our printable hedgehog template is free and you can print as many copies as you like which means that’s great if you’re working with a class or preschool group too.

Start by printing out your hedgehog template and then colouring in the body brown with a colouring pencil. You could colour in the whole body if you like but as we’ll be covering the main part with our paper I chose just to colour the lower part.

Using a black pen draw a face on to your hedgehog.

Cut out your strips of brown paper. Mine are made from a brown paper bag but you could also use brown paper if you have it or brown wrapping paper. For this craft it really doesn’t matter how thick or thin each of your strips are ant the length doesn’t really matter either. You could try and make the ends a bit pointed but to be honest I thought that would be a bit too much of a faff and would leave little bits of paper left over which then adds to the amount of cleaning you have to do afterwards. Plain strips all the way for me!

Carefully cover the main part of your hedgehog’s body with glue. When I was making this craft I squeezed the bottle of Elmer’s that I was using and it literally exploded all over my template – whoops! I obviously made a second one and I’m sure yours will be a bit more successful! If you are using liquid glue (PVA or Elmers) for this craft then you might want to spread it over the area using a glue spreader.

Place your brown paper strips onto your hedgehogs body starting with the back of the hedgehog.

Once you have done the end of the hedgehog move towards its face adding more paper strips as you go until all of the hedgehogs body is covered. If you want you could bend the paper a little to make it more of a 3D craft.
