Fall Tree Craft with Real Leaves

Updated on 30th August 2021 by Kate Williams | Leave a Comment

This fall tree craft with real leaves is perfect for making after you’ve been pout for a walk with your child, I think all of us have come home with a pocket full of the most pretty leaves at some point.

I nearly didn’t share this activity because I thought that maybe it might be too simple? But then I remembered that when you have kids there’s often no such thing as too easy, we love those easy to prepare fun activities and this fall tree fits the bill.

This craft uses our free tree template meaning that it’s a super cheap craft for you to do with your kids, after all you shouldn’t need to buy any leaves either!

My kids have always been happy to look for pretty fall leaves when we’ve been out for a walk (although I’m sure I remember a walk back from preschool that took about three times as long because of this) and of course if you have a garden then you might be able to grab some leaves from out there too.

I’d recommend going leaf collecting when it’s dry outside, wet leaves are going to be harder to craft with and of course they might make your tree template wet too.

How do you glue down real leaves

There are two main ways to glue down real leaves and both have their pros and cons.

For this craft I’ve used school glue / PVA glue* because that was what I had at home at the time. It’s good because it’s something that most of us have already (keeping this craft super cheap) and if your child changes their mind once they’ve placed a leaf down they can move it to where they’d like it to be.

It does take quite a while to dry though and you often need quite a lot of glue to stick down the leaves.

The other option is double sided tape* which you can see in use in our nature tree craft (the spring version of this craft!)

The benefit of this is that it sticks things down straight away and they won’t move, handy if anyone might knock your craft and push something out of place (which is the kind of thing we’ve definitely had happen here before).

However it does stick things down straight away so you need to be certain where you are going to stick things before you actually place them down.

Notes

If you are using glue for this craft then you might want to consider printing your tree template onto card rather than paper as this can hold the moisture of the glue better.
