I nearly didn’t share this easy fall leaf craft just because, well, it seemed a little too easy? Truth be told it’s been sat in my computer for a couple of weeks now but then I remembered what it’s like on those days when you just need an idea for something to do with the kids – anything that keeps you out of the wet weather outside and means you don’t need to watch any more Paw Patrol and I thought actually? I’ll share it because I’ve totally been there too. So this is a really quick and easy fall craft that you can do together plus it only takes a couple of minutes to set up, phew.
This craft is really easy to set up and it’s a great way for your child to practice their pincer grip too. Like this idea? Make sure that you bookmark this page or pin an image so you don’t forget about it, plus keep reading for more simple fall crafts.
This is a really easy craft to do with your child but you will need to do a little bit of prep work. Start by cutting out the shapes of the leaves from coloured card – I always recommend card rather than paper for crafts like this just because a lot of paint tends to be used when you are decorating and this can make normal paper go a bit floppy or – even worse – it can tear when you try to move it afterwards. Being that little bit thicker makes card a lot easier to work with.
You could also use our free leaf template to make this craft if you don’t fancy drawing the shapes freehand.
Pop some fall coloured paints onto a reusable plate – we have one that we keep with our craft supplies just for this so it doesn’t get mixed up with the normal crockery.
Putting paint onto a plate means that it’s going to be easier for your child to access it. Another added bonus is it’s a lot harder to knock over a plate with paint on it than it is a pot full of paint. Not impossible admittedly but I know I’ve cleaned up after a lot of knocked over paint pots over the years!
You can set this part up yourself or your child might enjoy helping to choose the coloured paints and helping to squeeze them out onto the plate.
Next let your child grab a pom pom and go wild decorating their leaf, it’s a great opportunity for the two of you to talk about the changing colours in the leaves and can also open up discussions about colour mixing too – what happens if yellow and red mix together?
You can use fingers to hold the pom pom which is a great way to work on your pincer grip or if you’re not to keen on fingers getting messy then you can hold it using a clothes peg instead.
Keep going until your leaf is covered then leave it to dry before displaying!
