Christmas books for children: creating traditions

12th December 2013 by Kate Williams | 14 Comments

Last year I bought this book for the Toddler Bears magic moon We wanted to start creating some family traditions of our own and so on Christmas Eve silly old Santa accidentally let it fall out of his sleigh and into our front room. This is obviously the kind of thing that happens if you stop and have a glass of sherry at every house you visit!

Christmas book ideas

It’s a cute story about a bear who wants to see the moon but is too scared, a story of learning to be brave. But I love how a cheap book we picked up helped to create something even more magical for our family, a tradition that we can repeat every year.

Creating Christmas traditionsDoes your family have any Christmas traditions? Do share them below, I’d love some more ideas of things our family could do too!

What a lovely tradition. This year we are going to have a go at ‘Reindeer food’ with the little ones and we always open new pyjamas on Xmas Eve.

What a beautiful tradition. My favourite Christmas tradition is that everyone in our extended family contributes to Christmas dinner at our house. So my Mum cooks and bring the turkey, my sister the mince pies and cheese, my brother-in-law makes a trifle and so on.

That looks like a lovely book 🙂 We also love Christmas books, we’re starting our ’12 Books of Christmas’ tomorrow. The rest of our traditions are things like new pyjamas on Christmas Eve and leaving out cookies for Santa 🙂

After moving to the other side of the Atlantic, we discovered that the freedom to found our own family traditions was an unexpected silver lining to the loneliness of living on a continent where you know no one. It’s allowed us, as a multicultural/multiracial family, to find our own path in choosing what we celebrate. Freed from the shackles of visiting those who ‘don’t partake’ we now throw ourselves into the festivities with gay abandon!
With halal turkey and this year *drum roll please…* homemade Christmas puds, our repertoire of traditions just keeps growing and growing. But for starters, we always sprinkle ‘reindeer food on the lawn, and try to chuck some on the roof. And on Christmas Day what better way to help you digest than a Dance-Off with the X-box and the rest of the family as judging panel 🙂
    Merry Christmas!

A dance-off is probably my favorite idea for a Christmas tradition so far ;o)

What a great story. We have the night before the night before Christmas which I bought last year and want to make into a tradition.

I think this is a bit of common one…but here it is anyway….we write a little note to Santa and leave it by the chimney with a carrot for the reindeer and a glass of whisky and a mince pie for Santa. In the morning….they are ‘GONE’!!
