Free Printable Build a Caterpillar Craft
We love Eric Carle and I’ve shared lots of The Very Hungry Caterpillar crafts before but for this activity I wanted to share something that could be used with other spring activities too.
Between spring crafts, learning about the caterpillar life cycle and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, caterpillar crafts are really popular and this printable craft is a fun way to support scissor skills and make your own caterpillar at home, in kindergarten or in classrooms.
In the PDF file for this craft you’ll find two pages, the first is our adorable caterpillar itself while the second is an outline of a branch with flowers on it that you can stick your completed caterpillar on if you would like.

Caterpillar Craft Supplies
- Build a caterpillar craft PDF
- White paper
- Colored markers, coloring pencils or crayons
- Scissors
- Glue
Paper Caterpillar Craft
To start with you need to print your PDF out onto white paper. If you are only using the caterpillar itself then obviously you will only need to print out the first page but if you are also using the branch then print out both.

Color in all the parts of your caterpillar and the background page if you are using this.

Following the dotted lines on the printable carefully cut out all the separate parts of your caterpillar.

Glue the eyes onto your caterpillar’s face and then stick the tentacles onto the back of their head.

Assemble your caterpillar by gluing the six body parts together in order of size and the sticking on the caterpillar’s feet with half stuck on top of the caterpillar’s body and the other half glued to the underneath.
If you’d like to you can refer to the picture of the caterpillar at the top right hand corner of the printable to ensure that you are sticking everything in the right place.

If you’d like you can now stick your completed caterpillar craft onto its branch ready to enjoy the spring sunshine.

Cut and Paste Caterpillar Craft
Equipment
- Build a caterpillar craft PDF
- White paper or cardstock
- Scissors
- Glue
- Coloring pencils, colored markers or crayons
Instructions
- Print the PDF file onto white paper or cardstock.

- Color in all the parts of the caterpillar. If you are using the background scene you can color this in too.

- Cut out all of the caterpillar parts.

- Glue the eyes onto your caterpillar's face and glue the tentacles onto the back of its head.

- Stick the six body parts together and then glue the legs onto your caterpillar in pairs with three at the front of the body and three glued behind.

- If you are using the scene page then you can now glue your completed caterpillar onto the branch.
