Easy Bird Feeder for Kids to Make

28th September 2018 by Kate Williams | 6 Comments

As the seasons change I always find myself being trying to make sure that we spend as much time outside as we can. These easy bird feeders are super simple for kids to make and the perfect way to encourage kids to spend a little more time outdoors plus they’re a great way to remind kids (and ourselves!) to look after nature in the area around us.

Just so you’re aware, this is an old post that I thought I’d share again as I’ve made a little video to go with it (and because it’s a nice activity to do with your kids this weekend!) I’ve also got lots more ideas for DIY birdfeeders and autumnal crafts so do check out the links at the end of this page. Want to make sure you don’t forget any of these ideas? Make sure you bookmark or pin them!

Making your easy bird feeder:

What was so nice about making this bird feeder is that it’s so simple even my preschooler could make it with almost no help. There was nothing that really required adult help or supervision so your kids can really feel like they did the whole thing themselves and did their bit to help feed the birds in your garden!

If you’d like to see how we made it you can watch the video below or follow the written instructions underneath.

We started by making a hole in the corner of the bread with our fingers and then I threaded through a bit of garden string and tied that in a knot to make a loop, the kids helped out pulling the knot tighter as I wanted to keep them as involved as possible.

They then spread peanut butter onto their bread using a butter knife and then pressed bird feed on top of the peanut butter. Once the first side was done they turned the bread over and did the same on the other side.

We had a robin that kept flying up to us while we were making these and once we’d hung them up on a tree the kids were really happy to see him go and eat some!

Wow! That really is an easy bird feeder. Peanut butter is perfect for birds, but I never would have thought of it.

That looks super tasty for the birds. I’m sure the greedy starlings in my garden would soon flock to it.

I do this every weekend with my son but we toast the bread to make it more sturdy & use natural peanut butter. We put the seeded bread into reusable, square Suet Cages that only cost a couple of dollars . We also make Honey Nut Cheerio wreaths with peanut butter & seeds and I can’t believe how much birds enjoy it. I hang the seed wreaths on small branches where there are also natural “perch” branches because the birds that visit my yard do not like getting their tiny feet in peanut butter and even wipe their beak after eating a peanut butter, seeded treat (:

My grandson just wanted to eat the peanut butter! I had to make him a PB & J! Cute idea!
