How To Make Button Earrings

Updated on 22nd October 2014 by Kate Williams | 8 Comments

You know when you see someone wearing something and you think ‘I should buy that!’ And then you think ‘Actually, no, I shoud make that! Duh!’ Well that was me and even though it was super easy to figure out how to make button earrings (and super easy to make them too!) I figured I’d share it to help inspire someone else, after all, who couldn’t do with more cute accessories?!

how to make button earringsSo first of all you obviously need some buttons, I got mine at the local fabric shop for 20p each. Personally I think if you’re doing button earrings then they need to really look like buttons if you know what I mean. That’s four holes for me. Yep. Also needed is some superglue and some earring posts and backs. Thankfully I had some left over from when I used to do silversmithing but in my opinion if you’re going to put a bit of metal through your actual flesh it’s worth getting silver rather than a cheaper metal. I buy these from Cooksons, the earring backs on the other hand were 99p for 10 or something from Primark.

how to make your own earringsStuff assembled and you’re ready to go, now put a tiny bit of glue on the back of your earring post. It’s way, way better to not have enough and have to do it again than to have big globs of glue seep through the button holes and make you feel sad. Superglue is not fun to try and undo (by the way, neither is it fun if you mess up the soldering of earring posts onto silver. No it is not.) Place the posts carefully onto the middle of the backs of your earrings. Having four holes really helps to line things up here too!

DIY Button earringsSo now you know how to make button earrings and will never be stuck again for jewellery for a night out (or, umm, wander up to playgroup). Do let me know if you’ve made any jewellery yourself, I’m super nosy about that kind of thing!

So cute, if only my ears didn’t swell and turn bright red when I try to get an earring in 🙁

Just love this idea! What size of buttons did you use and what size of posts?
    Thank you from Canada

They were just normal earring backs and I made sure that the buttons were big enough to cover the flat part of the posts.
