Feather Garland DIY

Updated on 17th November 2023 by Kate Williams | 29 Comments

After spotting these gorgeous feathers a couple of weeks back in my local fabric shop I knew I had to have them! I’m a little bit obsessed with making garlands (so much quicker and more fun than proper bunting I think) so a feather garland seemed like the perfect thing for me to make!

Feather garland DIY

This DIY is really really quick to make, I think the thing that took me the longest was threading the needle!

For this you will need:

Feathers

Bakers Twine

Needle (Use a large one such as a darning needle, bakers twine is thick)

Something to hang your feather garland with. I used washi tape as it’s easy to move around and …err… I love washi tape.

Measure out how long you want your garland to be and cut your bakers twine appropriately. Near one end tie a knot, this is where your first feather will go. Thread your needle with the bakers twine and then ‘sew’ through your feather. Be a bit careful here as they can split.

thow to make a feather garland

Move your feather along to where your knot is and then tie another knot the other side of your feather. This is to stop the feathers sliding down the bakers twine once you have hung your feather garland on your wall.

Repeat this along the length of your bakers twine, spacing out your feathers. I would recommend ensuring that they are all facing the same direction so that they will hand nicely against your wall.

Done! Attach your lovely new feather garland to your wall using washi tape or similar. At the moment this is hanging above some pictures in my hallway which I love but it may make its way into my daughters room when she moves in there? Who knows! Either way I think it looks great.

Do let me know if you make this and if you could tweet me a picture that would be even better, I’d love to see it!

These look absolutely gorgeous. And I had no idea you could buy feathers! Our two love them, so I really need to find a good local fabric shop….

I totally need those feathers now!! They look so wonderful I feel I have to touch them. It is lovely to make something with them so that they can be appreciated rather than stashed away in a craft box.

So simple. I like the idea of making something like this for my daughter’s bedroom when we decorate it, but she has such a liking for playing with feathers I don’t think it would last very long.

This is so simple but really lovely. I’m a bit obsessed with all the spring pastels around at the moment and am imagining this in some muted pastels and how gorgeous that would be… will be keeping my eye open for feathers 🙂
