Easy Smoothie Ice Lollies for Kids

Updated on 22nd February 2020 by Kate Williams | 12 Comments

smoothie ice lollies

Every now and again I think ‘Is this worth posting? Should I even mention this?’ But with stuff like this I think you know what? If it helps out one parent who’s having issues getting food down their child’s neck then it’s worth doing! So lets post it!

Smoothie ice lollies, a revelation round here. The toddler is in one of those toddler food fads at the moment. The tiny person equivalent of going on the Cambridge Diet. He won’t eat anything covered in sauce, he won’t eat vegetables, he won’t eat, well pretty much anything really. Except for at playgroup where he is apparently hoovering it up. Typical.

He is, however, addicted to ice lollies, heaven to a three year old apparently being a Batman cartoon double bill with lolly juice running down your chin. He’s also obsessed with helping me cook so I suggested that we made ice lollies together. Bingo. Smoothie purchased from the shops, poured into lolly molds and soon he was munching away on them, me happy that they contain vitamins and not just sugar.

Of course if you were a really good parent you could make your own smoothies for this, perhaps sneak in some carrot or avocado, there’s plenty of inspiration over on the BBC Good Food site if you fancy a swiz.

Me? I’m just happy that I can relax a bit more and enjoy our time together discussing plot lines and who we are in Batman. I’m Huntress, obviously.

Any advice on sneaking something nutritional into kids? Let me know below!!

I have found soup is the best way to get veggies in my 5 yo and a tomato and vegetable mix all pureed up makes a great sauce to have with pasta and you can make a huge batch and freeze it in portions!
Smoothie lollies are a great idea! We also love ‘fruity milkshake’ – banana and strawberries blended with milk and served with a straw 🙂

I was the same when my boys were young. I did make these sorts of things. At 15 and 13 they are still not big fruit eaters however they will have strawberries covered in chocolate and also I make fruit yoghurt from frozen raspberries and natural yoghurt which they love. I have never had a problem getting them to eat veg as I put alsorts in pies and bolognaises etc but fruit has always been a problem 🙂

Mine are pretty good eaters thankfully – although Little Miss can be a bit of a fusspot. When they were smaller they loved Spag Bol and I used to add tonnes more veg to theirs than I put in ours – if it was cut up really small they never realised! Even these days, Little Miss, who declares a hatred of mushrooms will eat them in bolognaise, soup and even the other day a Hungarian ghoulash which was largely mushrooms!

These look lovely – would it be wrong for a grown-up to eat them…??!! I’m lucky enough that so far my kids will eat most things I put in front of them, including the weirdest of veg that I wouldn’t expect them to eat like radishes and artichokes, maybe that’s the French gene in them?

Fab idea. I’ve never given Nancy any frozen lollies before, and these seem a great way to get some fruit and vitamins eaten. Will be giving these a go x

I made some lollies with my daughter and thought we may progress to smoothies ones, but my moulds were dreadful and leaked so we threw them away. Where are your moulds from?

On the same theme have you tried blitzing banana and a splash of milk in a blender and then freezing it? It makes the most amazing ‘ice cream’ and little ones have no idea they are basically eating a banana! I also snuck really finely chopped leeks into a pancake on Shrove Tuesday and no-one batted an eye-lid. Sneaky win! If you want more ideas for sneaking fruit and veg into your childs diet my friend has the same problem and blogs her Sneaky Veg recipes here http://sneakyfruitandveg.wordpress.com
