Kite Template (FREE Printable PDF)

Updated on 18th February 2026 by Kate Williams | 2 Comments

This free printable kite template is perfect for making some easy crafts with your child or you can use it as a simple kite coloring sheet too.

Kites are such a recognisable symbol for all of us and playing with kites is something that I think all of us do at least once during our childhood.

Kite crafts are a great way to encourage creativity too as kids can create their own designs and use their favorite colors to create something that’s unique.

Kite Template

I think of kites as being a summer thing but I know they’re really popular as fall and spring crafts too, I suppose as long as it’s not raining then any time of year is good for kite flying!

In this PDF pack you’ll find two different designs that you can download. The first is the more basic outline. This one is perfect for adding your own creative ideas to and trying out some simple art projects.

The second design is the one with bows on the long tail of the kite, this one is perfect for coloring or if you’d like a little more guidance.

Whatever craft or activity you’d like to do just print the template you want, of course you can print as many copies as you need as well so it’s perfect if you’re planning on making a lot of crafts at home or if you need copies for everyone in your classroom at school or pre-k. They’d be the perfect addition to a themed bulletin board for spring time or summer too!

If you love kite crafts or if you’re doing an activity with kids of different ages why not check out our build a kite printable? Its cut and paste design is perfect for kids who are working on their scissor skills and you’ll find lots of bows, flowers and stars to decorate your kite with.

Kite Craft Ideas

Kite Coloring Sheet

Use this printable as a coloring page and grab your markers, crayons, coloring pencils, pastels or paints and get creative making a colorful design using all your favorite vibrant colors.

Create a Bow

Using the more basic kite outline grab some materials to add your own decorations for the kite tail.

You could use yarn, crepe paper, wool, paper, ribbon or scrap material and then glue these into place.

Kite Mosaic Craft

Practice using scissors and cut out shapes to glue onto your template.

This is a great way to use up any scrap paper you have too such as construction paper, wrapping paper or old magazines. You could even try gluing on scraps of fabric.

Kite Handprint Craft

Grab the paints and color in your child’s hands before using handprints to make colorful bows on your kite craft, this would make a super cute keepsake too so make sure you write the date on this one!

Stickers

This is a perfect activity for toddlers and preschoolers who are too young to use scissors to add a bit of creativity and it’s great for fine motor skills too.

If you have any themed stickers as well then it could be fun to theme it for their favorite cartoon, animal or why not give it a beach theme?

Add the Sky

Make this into a picture of your kite flying in the sky by coloring in the background blue or cutting out the kite shape and gluing it onto some blue paper.

Add some clouds to your picture by gluing on some fluffy cotton balls.

Make a Suncatcher

I think that suncatcher crafts are a wonderful activity to do with kids as in addition to being fun to create they’re a good one for kids to display afterwards for some cute room décor.

Grown ups will need to cut out the outline of the kite shape for kids but children can add tissue paper or cellophane to make the colored parts to make a gorgeous stained glass effect.

If you haven’t made one before then check out the instructions for our pumpkin suncatcher which also has a video tutorial to help.

More Summer Crafts for Kids

On this site you’ll find loads of free resources from free printables to help you prep activities quickly to easy and quick crafting ideas that you can try out at home, in a preschool or in a classroom.

This seahorse craft uses another of our free printable templates and a bleeding tissue technique to make a really nice craft. If you can spray water then you can make this!

Got some paper plates at home? This paper plate bee uses recycled materials and torn paper for what I think is a pretty cute result!

This shark craft is another one that uses one of our free templates.
