Q-Tip Painted Snowman

Q-tips are one of those things that people tend to have knocking around in the back of a cupboard but don’t really use, which makes them a great thing to craft with!

Because none of us like waste, right? If you do need to buy some though they’re pretty cheap. Which means they’re perfect if you want to do an activity with a large group.

Q-tips are also known as cotton buds or cotton swabs.

They’re also great to paint with because if your painting does go outside the template (which depending on the age of your child could be quite likely) then it really doesn’t matter at all.

Some extra circles and dots of paint? That’s just more snow falling.

Got a big line of white paint (it happens.) Well that’s just some snow falling super quickly. It’s all fine.

Snowman Craft Materials

  • Q-Tips
  • White paint
  • Snowman template PDF (see above) printed onto blue paper or cardstock
  • Black marker pen
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Colored cardstock or paper for the snowman’s nose and scarf
  • Plate or tray to pour the paint onto

How To Make Your Snowman Q-Tip Painting

Start by printing your template onto blue paper or cardstock. You don’t need to use the template and can just draw a snowman shape yourself but it’s particularly helpful if you’re working with a group in a classroom so you don’t have to draw 30 snowman outlines.

Color in your snowman’s hat. I’ve used just a plain black marker pen for this but if you want to choose another color that’s fine or you could try adding a ribbon or some holly to the design.

Pour your white paint onto your plate and then dab your q-tip into it before dabbing it onto your snowman to cover him in white dots.

When the paint is dry draw on eyes and buttons for your snowman using your black marker.

Cut out a scarf shape from colored paper and a triangle shape from orange paper for your snowman’s nose and glue both of these onto your finished craft.

Ways To Adapt This Snowman Craft

If you don’t have any q-tips at home you could swap this for pom poms or cotton balls. Don’t want paint on your fingers? Use a clothes peg to hold them.

Instead of using a black marker to draw in your snowman’s features you could use another q-tip dipped in black paint.

Draw or paint a background onto your picture or maybe add some snowflake stickers.

Equipment

  • Reusable plate
  • Black marker pen
  • Scissors
  • White paint
  • Glue

Materials

  • Q-tips (cotton buds)
  • Colored cardstock for scarf and nose

Instructions

  • Print out your snowman template.
  • Colour in your snowman's hat. I've used a black marker but you can go with whatever color and design you fancy.

  • Pour some white paint onto your plate.
  • Dip your q-tip into your paint and colour in the snowman using dots made by this.
  • Once the paint is dry you can add some details to your snowman. Using a black pen draw in your snowman's eyes, mouth and buttons. I'd recommend a Sharpie for this as it draws well over paint but as they're permanent I know they're not always the best choice with young kids in which case a chalk pen normally works as well and is less likely to stain.
  • Cut a triangle out of orange card or paper and a scarf shape from coloured card and glue these on to your snowman to finish your craft.

Notes

I've used paint on a reusable plate as this makes it easier to access and dip your cotton bud in.
You could also do more dots around your snowman to show more snow falling from the sky.
