The Snail and the Whale Crafts: Movable Paper Plate

23rd October 2017 by Kate Williams | 3 Comments

Last year at school my son studied The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson and I remember thinking at the time that there weren’t that many The Snail and the Whale crafts about so after making our movable paper plate ghost last week I thought it would be fun to try and make a little craft of the two friends off on their adventure around the world!

The Snail and the Whale Crafts Materials:

Paper plate

Blue paint in two shades

Craft stick

Washi tape

Card – white or blue / grey for your whale

Felt tip pens

Yellow card

Scissors

Let’s make it:

Start by painting your paper plate in two shades of blue paint. Of course if you don’t have two shades of blue you can improvise by adding a bit of white to what you have or if you have yellow you could perhaps recreate the scene where the whale gets stuck on the beach. Don’t think the kids can wait for paint to dry? Fair enough! You could colour in your scene with felt tip pens instead which is a great way to give more detail too.

If you are painting then while it’s all drying you can make your snail and your whale. On a piece of card draw a picture of the two friends and colour it. I recommend using card rather than paper as it will stand up better when you play with your paper plate. Attach a craft stick to it using washi tape or sellotape. You could of course use glue for this but PVA takes a while to dry and the glue sticks can be a bit less durable once your snail and whale start getting played with!

The Snail and the Whale Crafts activities

Cut a sun shape out of your yellow card and glue this onto your paper plate and then carefully cut a line along the bottom of the paper plate  – this should go from one side to the other but not go to the actual edge or you’ll cut the bottom off the paper plate.

Pop your craft stick through the hole in the paper plate and your snail and the whale craft is ready to be played with!
