There is moment of dread that most parents of school age kids have been through, that moment when you look in your childs’ school bag and see the letter saying they have to dress up. I’ve had it before with a few weeks notice and I’ve had it with a couple of days notice. Either way I seem to leave it to a couple of days before to get myself in gear though, I’m very much a last minute person! So for those of you who couldn’t face making an outfit until the last moment and for those of you that only had a the smallest amount of notice possible here’s my guide to last minute costumes for World Book Day as well as a quick guide to where you can buy some outfits should your creative juices wear a little thin at all!
Last Minute Costume Ideas for World Book Day
George’s Marvellous Medicine: No picture for this one but this is what I’ve done before! George wears a red top and blue trousers (jeans). Find a empty bottle (washing up liquid etc) and swish some brown paint around it. If you do’t have brown mix a few colours together to make it. Write ‘George’s Marvelous Medicine’ on the front and job done!
Peter Rabbit: Play Learn Everyday hunt through the clothes they already have to make this super cute outfit
The Night Pirates: This outfit looks spectacular but it’s totally easy enough to make last minute – phew!
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: This outfit from Renovation Bay-Bee is genius, right? The mask is brilliant!
Norman the Slug: I adore this book and this outfit from ZingZing Tree is a great one for raiding your recycling bin. Also, looks awesome.
King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table: This easy knights outfit from In The Playroom doesn’t involve sewing at all – perfect for last minute projects!
The Very Hungry Caterpillar: I love this idea from Parenthood Highs and Lows. In addition to the hat there’s a great (and simple!) idea for clothes too.
Buying Last Minute Outfits for World Book Day
I must admit that apart from my Roald Dahl outfit I tend to buy outfits for World Book Day and the other dressing up days the kids have. Sometimes I’m too busy and sometimes I just can’t face it! Online marketplace ebay.co.uk have a brilliant selection of dressing up outfits and in their World Book Day section I was able to find brilliant outfits for Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and The Fantastic Mr Fox. Actually I got a bit too involved in my research at this point and may have found an outfit that I now have to buy my daughter, she would adore this Batgirl outfit though!
You can also find loads of accessories on ebay.co.uk to help you make your own World Book Day outfits including wigs, facepaints and accessories and of course they sell loads in their sewing and fabric category if you want to get crafty this year.
