I was really nervous when I first made them as my drawing skills are…. well I didn’t even get to take my GCSE in art lets put it that way! The good thing about these Christmas nativity story stones though is that I’ve made them super simple so they really are achievable – anyone can draw a sheep or a manger, especially if you have a little practice on paper first!

What Should You Include In Your Nativity Stones
How many painted rocks you decide to make is up to you. Obviously you’ll need the basics for telling the telling the story of the birth of Jesus – Mary & Joseph and of course the baby Jesus, but if you need a reminder or some inspiration these are ones you’ll probably want to include.

What Pens Should You Use for Making Story Stones?
My kids love decorating story stones and painted rocks and to be honest I do too. If you don’t want to use this activity as story stones it would be nice to make them as painted rocks to hide around your local area.
For painting rocks I prefer to use chalk pens or paint pens as both my kids and me are more used to using pens than painting so it means our pictures are a little more accurate. The brands that I buy are Chalkola or Posca both of which I have a good record with for successfully wiping off my kids hands when they’ve finished!
If you’d prefer to paint then go for a small paintbrush, acrylic paints will probably also be best for this.
If you decide to use this as a painted rock craft, or you’d just like your story stones to last a little longer then I’d also recommend buying some spray varnish.
