Yesterday I did a super brave thing, I got the glitter out. I know that if you write about kids crafts then somehow you are expected to automatically love glitter but this mama has spent too long cleaning the stuff up to be a big fan of it! We did find a way to keep the mess under control though and I think our winter tree suncatchers worked out really well!

You will need
Black card
Glue
Scissors
Glitter (totally optional, I won’t judge you on this one)
Round kitchen towels (we used the Ora ones, you could use coffee filters too)
Liquid blue food colouring
How to make it
Firstly after our fun making the our rainbow fish I’m a little bit conscious about staining our tablecloth so I protected it using some small carrier bags, a good side effect of this is that if you do decide to use glitter then it helps to keep it all in one place and it means that you can easily move your winter suncatchers to a different place to dry.
I put some blue food colouring in bowls for the kids and they used these to paint their paper towels, we experimented with adding water to the food colouring and a tiny bit of black food colouring too so that they could see the different shades this produced. If you are in the US you could use liquid watercolours for this but sadly we can’t seem to get them in the UK (not fair!) and besides which I think it’s quite nice to find another use for the stuff in our kitchen cupboards. Painting the kitchen towels actually kept my kids occupied for ages!
Once you have finished painting you can put some glue onto your paper towels and shake some glitter onto them, then leave them to dry, this took about 24 hours for us as my kids really went for the whole painting business. You could put them on a radiator or something to dry them but I would recommend being careful if you’ve used glitter as oh my days the mess. I’d also recommend keeping them on a plastic bag until they are dry just in case of staining.
Once they are dry shake off any excess glitter and cut out the tree stump shape from black card, stick it on to your kitchen towel and your winter tree suncatcher is ready to be hung up in your window!
