The other week in our local woods I saw some huge lumps of wood and instantly started planning at least a million tutorials with them. Then my dad kindly reminded me I had no room for huge lumps of wood at home. Boo. However he also pointed out that he had loads of bits of wood at home I could have and I figured if nothing else I would have room for some wooden drink coasters! Go me!
What you need:
Wood
Sand Paper
Nail Varnish
How to make wooden drinks coasters:
So the first thing is obviously that you need some wood, look out for people chopping down trees! I got my dad to chop these into slices about 1cm thick slices. Yep, I could have done this myself but he had one of those big rotating saw blade things and I was happy to let him do it!
Then sand the wood down, this should only take you about 30 seconds.
To make my drinks coasters a funky colour I used an old pot of nail varnish. Yes, blue is my colour of choice. The first layer kind of sunk in but the second layer went on perfectly. This is a triple win because 1) You already have your favourite colours 2) You’re not buying anything (thrifty alert!!) and 3) Your coaster has a varnished waterproof coat with no extra effort for you. Whoop!
Leave them to dry and you’re done! It’s a great way to create something a little bit quirkey, bring a bit of nature into your home and have a cute coaster that you can easily wipe the wine stains off 😉 I think these would also look great outside for dinning or a garden party.

Brilliant. I’d never have known from the photos that it was just nail polish. Reckon I might have to do some of these if there’s some small logs on the farm and I can find a saw.

What a great idea with the nail polish! My daughter has formed an obsession with nail polish lately, to the point where she wants to paint everything with it because she can’t change her nail polish 10 times a day- I think this craft will be right up her alley. Off to text my husband to bring home perfectly cut and sanded slices of branch. 🙂

This is indeed a very cool concept. I am tired of using normal coasters in my house, which all look exactly the same, and there is no uniqueness among them. These wooden coasters look very different and I am surely going to try making them for my family as well!
