Printable Union Jack Flag

This PDF contains four different designs with slightly different sizes for you to choose from, you can print all of them or just pick the one which is best for the activity you want to do.

Of course you can print as many copies as you like so as well as them being great for at home you can also use them in a classroom or preschool. You could even use them as placemats at a street parties and pop your scones and cocktail sausages on them!

The first image in the PDF is an A4 sized flag while the second one has a little more room around it on the page, good if you want to add a little writing underneath it or you could cut the flag out with a margin and attach a stick to the side with sticky tape to turn it into a flag that you can wave at your celebrations.

The third image shows a flag with a flagpole and the final image has ‘Colour the flag of the United Kingdom, the Union Jack’ written on it.

Which Countries Use The Union Jack Flag?

The Union Jack is also known as the Union Flag and is the flag of the United Kingdom – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Union Jack also features on four other countries which are part of the Commonwealth Nations – Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tuvalu.

When Could You Use This Union Jack Template?

Of course you’re free to use this flag template whenever you like but there are definitely some occasions which lead themselves more to using this printable.

As I write this the Kings Coronation is on the near horizon and this printable would be great to use for activities for that.

You could also use it as part of learning about British history for example VE Day, or for Remembrance Day as well as any topics on geography that you might be looking at.

they’d also be fun to put up when the Olympics is taking place.

Union Jack Craft Ideas

Colouring

Colouring is a great activity for kids of all ages and these downloads make great free printable Union Jack flags to colour in, all you need to do is grab some crayons, colouring pencils or felt tip pens and you’re ready to get started.

If you are doing this activity with older kids then you might want to look at a picture of the Union Flag to make sure that you get the red, white and blue in the correct places but if you’re doing this as a simple activity with toddlers or preschoolers then obviously this is going to be less important.

Finger painting

If your kids don’t mind getting a little messy then painting with fingers is a great way to decorate something. You can either use the paint pads which kids can press their fingers onto or pour a bit of paint onto a plate or tray so that they can dab their fingers in it before dabbing it onto their flag.

When I’m doing finger-painting with my kids I always make sure to keep some wipes or a damp cloth to hand to reduce the risk of things getting covered in paint before they get to wash their hands in the sink!

Pom pom painting

If you have a child that doesn’t like getting paint on their hands then pom pom painting is a great alternative. I also like it because pom poms are the kind of thing that you get a lot on kids craft kits that I’m never quite sure what to do with.

You can hold onto the pom pom with your fingers or for a cleaner version clip it into the end of a clothes peg so that you have more distance between your fingers and the paint.

Tissue paper

There are three different ways that you could use coloured tissue paper to decorate your flag. Firstly you could cut it into shapes and glue it down, this is a good way to practice using scissors.

Secondly you could try tearing the tissue paper instead before you stick it down, this is really good for fine motor skills and there’s a really good (and easy to read) article on The OT Toolbox which explains all the different things that tearing paper can help kids with.

Finally another idea that I’ve done with my own kids quite a few times is to tear the tissue paper into pieces before scrunching it into balls before you stick it onto your template.

It’s really nice to do on a sensory level as it both sounds and feels good but on a more personal level I always felt that my kids rather enjoyed this as tearing and screwing up paper is the kind of thing they’d normally be told not to do!

I tend to prefer PVA glue rather than a glue stick for this as the scrunched tissue can need a bit more to hold it in place.

Collage

Not only do collages look great but they’re a brilliant way to use up any scrap materials that you have lying around and you can often find your craft supplies in your recycling bin or stuffed at the bottom of a craft box.

Good materials to look for might be red, white or blue scrap paper or pictures in magazines or comics, wool, fabric scraps and of course any pom poms or pipe cleaners that you got in a craft kit and then couldn’t find a use for!
