Paper Bag Polar Bear Craft

24th December 2021 by Kate Williams | 1 Comment

This polar bear paper bag puppet is so simple to make and to make it even easier I’m sharing two different designs with you today.

This would be a great polar bear craft for preschool as so you can choose the one that’s more suitable for your child’s age but it would also work for older kids too and of course it’s always important to go with your child’s interests – my daughter liked the simpler one more as she said it was cuter!

Polar Bear Craft

Of all the arctic animals I think that polar bears might be my favourite and their ones that I know my kids are normally drawn to as well.

Polar bears are great if you’re looking for winter crafts but they’re also a really good one for Earth Day and learning about the environment too.

What I really love about this craft is that you can play with it afterwards! Of course there’s nothing wrong with arts and crafts that you make just to display but I do like stuff that you can use and these cute polar bear puppets are perfect for playing or acting out a story with. Plus it’s fun to make your own puppets, right!

Polar Bear Books For Kids

I love crafts that you can make to fit with a story you can share your favorite books together! A book with a polar bear in it that my kids have read and enjoyed is There’s a Bear on my Chair by Ross Collins or you could try Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear by Bill Martin Jr and Eric Carle.

Materials Needed:

  • White paper bag
  • Black and pink markers
  • Scissors
  • White paper or cardstock
  • Glue

Polar Bear Puppet

To make this paper bag polar bar craft you will of course need to start with a paper bag. You can buy multipacks of these online (handy if your kids like to try out lots of ideas at once like my kids do.)

Next cut out some ear shapes from white paper or cardstock. I’ve used cardstock to make the ears a little more sturdy but paper or construction paper should work well too. Using scissors cut out the ears is a good way for kids to practice their scissor skills too. When you are done, glue the ears onto your paper bag.

Finally you need to draw on your bears features, I’ve added little pink cheeks as well because I thought they looked cute!

Use a black marker to make circles or ovals for the bears eyes and draw on a black nose and mouth.

With two separate designs the simpler one would be easier for younger children but as always it’s best to go with whatever interests your child the most.

For the more detailed puppet I’ve also added a circle to define their face and another for their belly with some little lines drawn on it to show their fur.

More Ideas for Adapting This Craft

This simple polar bear craft is designed to be adaptable for kids of all ages so you can change how you draw the features depending on your child’s age.

You could also cut out or draw on some paws for your bear if you like.

Instead of drawing fur on your bear’s belly you could glue on cotton balls.

Of course you could adapt it even further and make this a brown bear craft using a brown paper bag – it would be perfect for making the three bears to retell the goldilocks story or you could add more black paint and make your polar bear into a panda!
