Looking for an easy craft for kids that’s perfect for the summer? We think we have the answer with this bright and cheerful watermelon craft! What’s more you can use our free watermelon template to make it so it’s perfect as a group activity in classrooms and preschools or nice and easy to print out at home for an activity you can do together.
Watermelons crafts as such a great way of capturing that summer feeling with their instantly recognisable shape and gorgeous bright colours so they’re a great activity to do with your child.
It’s also a good excuse to have some watermelon as a snack when you’ve finished your craft, something that’s always popular here.

Painting With Pom Poms
We love pom pom painting as an alternative to using a paintbrush. It creates a really cool textured look and grasping hold of the pom poms can help with fine motor skills as well however holding the pom poms and dabbing them in the paint isn’t something that all kids are keen on as some kids prefer to keep their hands clean. Or maybe as a parent you’d prefer them not to get paint on their hands!
If this is the case then one alternative is to use a clothes peg to hold onto the pom pom. This is a method that we’ve used lots of times previously and definitely helps to keep little hands cleaner, although I always keep some wipes or a wet cloth to hand just in case!
If you do use a clothes peg to help with your painting then I’d recommend choosing larger pom poms as the smaller ones are harder to hold in the peg and also don’t give as much surface area to get the paint on.
I think its also fun for the painting generally if you use different sized pom poms as this can help make a more interesting look, especially if you use more than one shade for each colour as I have with the green on this craft.
You might want to use smaller pom poms for painting the black watermelon seeds though or as an alternative you could also use finger painting for this.
