Gingerbread Playdough and Christmas Playdough Ideas

Updated on 20th November 2018 by Kate Williams | 6 Comments

Both my kids love playing with playdough and as we seem to get through quite a bit of it I often end up making some too, it’s great for easy activities for toddlers as well as older kids (and me!) who enjoy playing with it. Today I’m sharing a recipe for Gingerbread playdough that I made last week as well as some ideas for playing with it. Love Christmas playdough? Me too, so I’m also sharing some of my favourite Christmas playdough ideas to help keep you inspired for some festive fun this Christmas.

What You'll Find on This Page

  • You will need:

You will need:

2 Cups Plain Flour

1/2 Cup of Salt

2 Tablespoons Olive Oil

2 Tablespoons Cream of Tartar

1 Cup Boiled Water

2 Teaspoons ground ginger

1/2 to 1 teaspoon dried cinnamon

How to make Gingerbread playdough:

Mix the flour, salt, oil, cream of tartar and spices in a bowl. Add the boiled water a bit at a time, stirring and kneeding it until it forms a dough. You will soon start to smell the gingerbread smell but if it’s not strong enough for you add a little bit more of each spice.

Tip – If your playdough is too dry, add some mare water. If it’s too wet, add some more flour.

Play ideas for Gingerbread Playdough:

Of course the traditional ideas for playing with gingerbread playdough is to give your child a gingerbread man cutter and some buttons to use as eyes and umm… buttons. Don’t panic if you can’t find these though, I predictably lost mine so we used star shaped cutters, beads, pipe cleaners plastic knives and silicone cake cases. My youngest is obsessed with singing ‘Happy Birthday to You’ so we made gingerbread playdough birthday cakes and popped a candle on the top!

More Christmas Playdough Ideas:

Playdough is a great Christmas craft because chances are you will spend at least some of the festive period indoors due to bad weather or poorly kids. These are some of my favourite Christmas playdough ideas.

I haven’t used playdough yet but have been saying I will need to every day lately. Going to have to try this recipe and see how M likes it. Fingers crossed she loves it as the other “flavours” sound great.

Would love to have you share this in the Christmas Craft linky I have started http://www.trainingmummy.com/2015/11/christmas.html
