A couple of weeks ago my lovely friend Jen asked me if I’d like to be involved in her kid made Christmas card series and of course I said yes and then I remembered two teeny tiny issues. We didn’t have any cards or craft materials. I did panic for a bit but actually this is real life in which sometimes you kids decide that they want to make things and you have to improvise a bit, even though I have a lot of crafting stuff my house is not Hobbycraft and, like most parents, I have to make the most with what we have. This driftwood Christmas tree card came about after a walk that I shared some pictures of on Instagram, filling my pockets with some freebie craft materials.

My daughter and I made these cards while sitting side by side so we could have a chat and I could help her if she needed it, she’s just turned three and I …well I’m significantly older than that.
As we didn’t have any card we used coloured paper which we folded in half and then in half again to make it a little more sturdy. Card would obviously be better here because driftwood is a little heavy for paper to hold up but our finished cards were able to stand so if you only have paper to hand it’s still ok. In a crafting emergency (which obviously I love the idea of).
To encourage my daughter to make this into a tree like shape we did the glue together making it into a triangle. My daughter loved squishing glue all over the rest of her card so I gave her some sparkly stuff to decorate with. Although I’m not a huge fan of glittery things (mainly because I’m the one cleaning) I know that my kids are so I gave my daughter some silver foil circles and snowflakes to decorate with to make her card a bit more Christmassy. The ones we used are table decorations from Morrissons and were a pound.
Due to the huge amount of glue used the cards took about 24 hours to dry, I placed them on a carrier bag out of reach of my kids during this time so that they didn’t get knocked around at all. They’ll make cute cards for family or we often put kid made cards in picture frames in our house to decorate over the festive season.

They look lovely, it’s good to be resourceful. We have often used twice folded paper to make celebration cards when we don’t have card in the house.
Such a great idea – a perfect craft to do with my four year old!
