3 Fun Activities with Stones at the Beach

13th August 2015 by Kate Williams | 6 Comments

A couple of weeks ago we went on holiday to Lowestoft, the kids had a great time but oh my days did it rain! On the one afternoon the weather cheered up we decided to get ourselves immediately down to the beach. Buckets and spades were packed and down we went, met there of course by the tide being in and humongous waves. Oops! There was however about a meter and a half of sand to sit on, so we parked ourselves there and I quickly had to come up with some things that my kids could play. Thankfully sea crafts for kids have become a bit of a speciality here so I was able to quickly come up with these fun activities with stones keeping them busy and happy and saving our little trip down to the waters edge!

3 Fun Activities with Stones at the Beach

Stone Cricket

As the waves kept rolling in they brought lots of sticks and seaweed with them! I took some of the largest sticks and placed them upright in the sand, we then used stones to try and knock them down.

Sand Bullseye

In the wet sand I drew out a target which we had to throw stones into, the winner was the person who got their stone closest to the bullseye in the middle. As with Stone Cricket above there was a bit of a sense of urgency in this that my son loved as if there was a big wave then the game would get washed away!

Stone Towers

We took it in turns to add stones on top of each other to build a tower, this is surprisingly more difficult than it sounds! This activity took a great deal of concentration and while it was beyond the skills (and interest) of my one year old, my four year old was fine with it. Needless to say though he prefered the activities with stones that involved knocking things down rather than building them up!

What fab fun activities. I love them. Although I am not sure I would let my boys throw a stone, They would never know when to stop – he he he

My two LOVE throwing stones into the sea – they could spend ages just randomly throwing rocks 😉

We were at the beach today! We actually did some rock skimming and made our own rock pools, but I love the idea of playing cricket! So typically British!
