Build an Elf Craft

Ever since I watched the film Elf with my kids we’ve become kind of elf obsessed at Christmas and I know my kids will love making this super cute Christmas craft.

Of course with two kids myself I also know that it really helps when I can give them the option of making a boy elf or a girl elf, things like this really matter in my house!

I am absolutely loving all the buildable paper crafts that we’ve been sharing for the holiday season and this build an elf craft is the perfect addition to our collection.

It’s the perfect way to wind down as you sit and color your Christmas elves in and cutting them out is great for some scissor skills practice too.

Plus at the end you’re left with a cute elf that you can display at home, on a bulletin board or even hung up on your tree as a kid made ornament, what’s not to love about that?

Elf Craft Supplies

  • Build an Elf PDF printed on white paper or cardstock
  • Coloring materials: crayons, coloring pencils or colored markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue or double sided tape

How To Make Your Own Elf Craft (Step By Step Instructions)

Start by printing out your craft template onto white paper or cardstock. I’ve used paper to make my elf and this is a totally fine option but if you want to use yours as a decoration or if you’re likely to want to keep it (gotta love kids crafts for keepsakes) then I’d recommend that you print it onto cardstock instead to make it a little more sturdy.

Next color in your elf. Obviously you only need to color in the parts that you’ll be using for your craft so choose a head and decide if you’d like your elf to have an accessory.

They can hold either a present or a candy cane, both of them or neither, go with whatever suits you.

Once you’ve colored in everything it’s time to grab the scissors and cut all of the different parts out.

Using glue or double sided tape stick your elf’s head onto their body and turning this over stick their legs onto the back of their shorts.

Stick the belt onto your elf’s body and glue the bell onto the end of you elf’s hat before sticking this onto the top of their head.

If you’d like your elf to be carrying a gift or candy cane then now’s the time to stick this onto their hand.

If you’d like to use these cute little elves as an decoration or ornament for your Christmas tree then you can either attach a loop of ribbon or yarn to the back of your elf’s head using a bit of sellotape or using a hole punch make a hole in the top of their hat to string it through.

Want to make this into a personalised craft? Cut out a photo of your child’s face an glue this onto our elf’s face so that your kid looks like one of Santa’s little helpers!

You could also adapt this craft and turn them into puppets by printing your elf template onto cardstock and then when it’s done glue or tape a craft stick on to the back so that you can play with it.
