Yesterday walking home from school I saw a group of kids all huddled up looking at something. Not wearing my glasses I couldn’t quite work out the look on their faces, happy, sad, shocked, I wasn’t sure but they were all totally spellbound and I walked over with my son wondering what they were all looking at, a painted rock or maybe some graffiti?
Neither as it turned out but instead a very friendly and cheerful robin, sat in the middle of the path chirping away to his many new found admirers. I love robins, we used to have two in our garden that my kids counted as pets and who we named and would go out to feed. Although they’re obviously around all year they really do feel like Christmas animals and it’s common to see them on lots of Christmas decorations (at least you do here in the UK? I wonder if robin’s are a Christmas animal elsewhere?!)

Paper Plate Robin
To make your paper plate robin you’ll need to start with a paper plate and some paints – red and brown. If, like me you don’t have any brown paint around it’s pretty simple to make – I mixed red and green paint together to make ours just adding a little bit at a time until I was happy with how it looked. Paint the main part of the robin’s body brown and the chest part red.
Next for the robin’s wings. You could paint another paper plate brown and cut the wings out of this but my paper plate robin’s wings are cut from brown paper. You could use leftover paper and card from a pack of coloured cards, brown packaging paper (which we seem to get a lot of this time of the year) or cardboard – perhaps the inside of a cereal packet?
Cut out a triangle for your robin’s beak from yellow scrap paper and glue this on and then draw on two eyes with a marker pen.

- Glue
- Scissors
- Black marker pen
Materials
- 1 Paper plate
- Paint red and brown
- Paper or card yellow and brown
Instructions
- Paint the chest of the robin red.
- Paint the rest of the robin's body brown.
- Cut out wing shapes from brown card or paper and glue these on to the robin's body.
- Cut out a yellow triangle from paper or card and glue this on for the robin's beak.
- Draw on the robin's eyes using a black marker pen.
