Ad. We loved trying out The Holiday Makers fun engineering activities during the summer so I’m really pleased to be able to work with them again to share this fun Ghoulish Ghost experiment for Halloween and details of some of the fantastic activities and events that are taking place during half term which are perfect for keeping the kids busy and inspiring them at the same time!

What is The Year of Engineering?

2018 is The Year of Engineering, a year when we’re showing that engineering is an exciting and creative career for kids to aim for! The Year of Engineering aims to shake up people’s ideas about what engineers actually do and inspire children to get involved

What is The Holiday Makers?

The Holiday Makers is a fun project to help parents who are looking for fun, free activities to get kids aged between 7 and 16 making and having fun during the holidays. It’s easy to access and get started. There are loads of engineering-inspired ideas on The Holiday Makers website including activities like the one we’re sharing today. You’ll also find  details about events and days out, as well as a printable holiday journal where kids can track the activities they’ve done and any events they’ve been to.

Days Out This Half Term

There are fun and engaging days out going on across the country this half term and you can find lots of ideas to choose from on The Holiday Makers site. I love the sound of Fireworks and Fairgrounds at Winchester Science Centre and over half term Brooklands Museum is giving kids the chance to see some amazing engineering up close with a tour of Concorde. Both of these events are fun, free and family friendly.

Ghoulish Ghosts

The Holiday Makers site contains lots of fun activities and experiments and this half term they’ve shared some spooky engineering activities for Halloween. Ghoulish ghosts is a simple activity that shows how static electricity works. You can grab the worksheet here for step by step instructions and to find out how engineers use this kind of electricity to create new technology! I’ve made a little video with my son showing him making his own ghoulish ghosts which you can see below!

I found that while I could cut the ghost out freehand (I like to try these things out too) my son found it much easier if he drew his ghost first before cutting it out.
