DIY Harry Potter Wands for Kids

These fun DIY Harry Potter wands were my sons idea, we’re currently reading the first of the novels and when he saw what I’d bought while shopping for craft supplies he was determined that this is what we were going to make! This easy Harry Potter craft was suitable for both kids (3 and 6) with only a little bit of help but does require a tiny bit of patience – I’ll share the less patient version with you too though as I know that can be a struggle with the younger ones!

Air Drying Clay

Paint – brown, yellow, green or whatever you have

In making these Harry Potter wands we were inspired by a video we saw by Awe Me about making Harry Potter wands from hot glue – it’s a really cool idea (and you can watch the video here) but I didn’t really fancy letting the three year old play with the glue gun. Also I’m kind of out of glue sticks right now so like most things we are very much dependant on what we can find at the time!

What the kids did find, of course, was some air drying clay that I’d bought. I love air drying clay because you can just take it out of the packet and start making things with it and you know the consistency will be perfect. the downside to it though is that of course it is air drying so it does take a while to harden. If you want to maake these wands but son’t think your kids can handle leaving them to dry that long then using salt dough would be a really good alternative as you can dry it in a microwave. We’ve only tried airdrying that too (no microwave here!) but this salt dough recipe and instructions from Rainy Day Mum should sort you out if you want to try that.

To make your DIY Harry Potter wands take some of the air drying clay and roll it out with one end thicker than the other. You are then ready to decorate, my son kept his fairly plain while me and my daughter rolled out more thinner bits of air drying clay to decorate with. Once your wand is finished you will then need to leave it for a while to dry before painting it.

Of course being clay rather than say, a plastic wand, I am expecting these to break at some point but they make a cool decoration for the kids rooms and it’s always good to make something the kids are actually interested in (and hey, it was their idea!). For now though we’re all happy practising our spells with our new wands and hoping we get the words right.
