This chocolate playdough is super quick and easy to make. The scent is absolutely gorgeous and it’s a good, cheap sensory activity that can keep your kids occupied for ages! If it’s cold outside you’re also more than welcome to pass this off as hot chocolate playdough, letting your kids play with it and a couple of mugs!
Ingredients:
2 Cups of plain flour
1/2 Cup of salt
2 Tablespoons of olive oil
2 Tablespoons of cream of tartar
6+ Teaspoons of hot chocolate powder (see below)
1 – 1 1/4 boiling water
How to make chocolate playdough:
Mix the flour, salt, olive oil, cream of tartar and hot chocolate powder in a bowl. Slowly add the boiling water, stirring with a spoon and then kneeding with your hands once it’s cool enough. This actually happens pretty quickly, my four year old son made ours and was squishing it almost instantly!
Add the water slowly to get the right consistency. I added a little bit too much but managed to correct this by adding some more flour.
We originally added 6 teaspoons of hot chocolate powder – the equivalent of making two mugs full. However I then decided to add ‘a little bit more’ to get a stronger smell and boom in loads went! It was fine as the dough was still warm enough for it to mix in properly and it smelt really good afterwards!
Ideas for playing with chocolate playdough:
Give your child things from the kitchen to play with- pasta, cookie cutters, straws…
Make chocolatey treats with them! We made some lovely ‘chocolate brioche’
Use your playdough to support learning numbers – we made chocolate chip cookies by squashing a bit into a cookie shape and then adding some little blobs for the chocolate chips. We then counted how many chocolate chips there are! You could do this for basic addition and subtraction too.
Let Batman fight naughty baddies on it. Yeah, that’s totally what ended up happening here!
