Gingerbread Latte Play Dough

Updated on 17th June 2021 by Kate Williams | 10 Comments

So I’ve been busy trying to think of some kind of Christmas playdough that I could make with my son and last week inspiration came to me, as it often does, fueled by caffeine. I was sat in Starbucks (my second home) and the red cups were calling me. Not to drink, obviously. They wanted to be blog props. Uh-huh. I figured that I could probably work out how to make some gingerbread latte play dough and hurry I did and oh my goodness it was ace!

Christmas playdough Gingerbread latte scented

Ingredients:

2 Cups of plain flour

1/2 Cup of salt

2 Tablespoons of olive oil

2 Tablespoons of cream of tartar

1 Tablespoon of ginger

1 Tablespoon of instant coffee

1 and 1/4 Cups of boiling water

How to make your Gingerbread Latte Playdough:

Put your flour, salt, olive oil, cream of tartar and ginger into a bowl. If you read my rose scented play dough before you might notice that I’ve managed to get my hands on some cream of tartar. Oh my goodness this is so much better! I finally hunted some down in Waitrose for 99p.

In the bottom of a cup put your tablespoon of coffee. Add boiling water to it to dissolve the granules properly, then add it to the rest of the mixture, stir and when it’s cool enough to handle kneed it together by hand. I found that one and a quarter cups of water worked perfectly for me but obviously add it bit by bit to see if you have the right consistency.

I was a bit worried if my son (being three) would ‘get’ this. I mean, do three year olds really want to play with coffee scented play dough?

Yep, apparently they totally do!

He loved that I’d put it in a Starbucks cup and pretended to drink it, then he played with the Christmas cookie cutters I’d found, pushing them into the top of his ‘drink’. After that all the play dough toys had to come out. And umm, the Transformers. Still, that’s imaginative play, right?!

As an aside here, I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before but I’ve seen a lot of blogs that describe home made play dough as baby safe or taste safe. This has a ton of salt in it. I have a one year old and she stayed in her highchair with some toys, it’s not safe for her so please do supervise little ones that might put stuff in their mouths!

Phew, public safety broadcast over. Anyway we loved this, it smelt all festive and it reminded me to put the kettle on too. Wins all round.

I love this, my kids would have a great time, they are always pretending to make us coffee. I might just have to go and get a starbucks coffee, just so I can bring the cup home to make this!

Mmmm, I can smell it now. Do you think I can get away with making it even though my boys are teenagers? 😉

Yes, it’s a lovely thing to play with but you do have to be really careful if you have a child that will put things in their mouth x
