What Is Day of The Dead (Día de los Muertos)?
Day of The Dead is a festival also known as Dia de los Muertos and is celebrated in Mexico on November 1st and 2nd as a way of honoring and remembering your ancestors that have passed away.
There’s a great article on National Geographic Kids if you’s like to learn more about the celebrations.
Sugar skulls represent departed souls and are decorated accordingly with designs including marigolds, hearts and moons.

Materials Needed
- Cut and paste sugar skull PDF
- White paper or cardstock
- Scissors
- Glue
- Colored pencils, colored marker pens or crayons
How To Make Your Cut and Paste Sugar Skull Craft
Print out all three pages of the PDF file. You can use white paper or card stock for this craft but you might want to choose cardstock for the skull outline to make it a bit more sturdy, especially if you’d like to use this as a mask.
Color in some of the items on the second pages using bright colors. You only need to color in the items that you’ll be using so only color one pair of eye decorations however you can color lots of the other decorations in to decorate your sugar skull.

Using scissors carefully cut out the skull shape and the items that you’ll be using to decorate it.
If you’d like to turn your skull into a mask then cut out the eye shapes as well and use a hole punch to put a hole in either side of the skull. You can then use some string, ribbon or elastic threaded through the hole to turn it into a mask.

Add a little bit of your glue to the back of your embellishments and use them to decorate your sugar skull.
I would recommend doing the largest pieces first so that you ensure that you have room for them on your skull.
