Well shock horror as it’s not quite Easter yet and we are already filled to the brim with Easter sweeties. Oops!
My son has been obsessed with plastic eggs for months (cheers YouTube) but I’ve refused to buy him one as I think they’re a bit of a con. Salvation for toddlers as usual comes in the shape of grandparents so he was super happy when one arrived in the post from my mum. After swiftly dealing with the sweets inside it he didn’t want to throw it out straight away and frankly I wasn’t super keen to add to the landfill that quickly so I thought we’d upcycle it.
My toddler loved this as it was an excuse to make his own musical instrument! First we put the dried pasta inside the plastic egg.
Then we wrapped washi tape around the closing and then all around the outside to make sure it was held in place. Job done, plastic egg maracas made, landfill saved and an awful lot quieter than the peppa pig recorder my husband was duped into buying last week. Yes, I know.
Have you made any of your own musical instruments? And don’t forget you can still enter my fab competition to win a Sizzix Big Shot Machine, perfect for all crafty sorts!

Lovely! I have plastic eggs to the egg hunt on Sunday, but I will reuse them afterwards. This is a lovely idea x #PoCoLo
A peppa pig recorder? that was he thinking! rookie mistake! I love the maracas – and you could change the sound by using rice or lentils – he could have a whole plastic egg orchestra !
Simplest idea ever but totally one which would go down brilliantly here – need to start digging out some eggs!

what a fun activity from something that would have gone in the bin. Great idea,
A great Easter craft, a much better way to use up plastic eggs than throwing away
These are really cool and not just for easter. My boys adored their egg shakers when they were smaller
What a fabulous idea – so beautifully decorated too 🙂 Thank you for linking to PoCoLo 🙂 x
They’re perfect for maracas! I bet these sound great with rice 🙂
I did think rice but I was a bit concerned about mess if they fell apart, still holding strong at the moment though! 🙂
Love this and sure my toddler would too. Definitely need to get some washi tape as well – I keep seeing it everywhere but we don’t have any in the craft stuff at home. #LetKidsBeKids
Very cute, we made something similar and the kids loved it
Great idea! My kids love music, I’ve been meaning to make musical instruments with them for a while.
Thanks for linking #LetKidsBeKids
