Once you have kids you find it becomes harder to focus on making your home look the way you want it and you don’t have the spare cash to splash out on a bunch of new stuff. Don’t give up, it’s important that you feel good about your home and that it’s a place which you enjoy spending time. Here are my suggestions for making your home a special, personal place, without breaking the bank.
There’s nothing new about upcycling, just take a look at Picasso’s Bull’s Head, made from a bicycle seat and handlebars. Let your imagination run free and look at objects with a creative eye. Old household objects often have a special beauty acquired through time, that’s why expensive vintage shops are full of them. You just need to look at objects with a fresh eye to open up their possibilities. Maybe that battered old board game would make a great top for a coffee table or that old toffee tin might make a quirky lampshade. With imagination and a lick of paint, even the humblest of objects can be transformed into an eye-catching item. There’s a brand of tinned tomatoes that has a great corrugated surface, with the addition of a few holes, they make stylish containers for tea-lights or your favourite cactus. Upcycling is fun and when it works out well it’s a real thrill, if it doesn’t then at least it hasn’t cost you a lot of money.
- Before You Buy A New Sofa
The family sofa takes a lot of punishment and it’s not long before they start to show signs of wear and tear. Why not wait until the kids are older before getting that sofa of your dreams because if you do, a year from now it’ll probably look like your old one. The simplest solution is to get a couple of throws or you could make a new slipcover for your old sofa.
This might just be the golden age of DIY. There are videos on the internet showing you how to do just about anything and there’s a range of tools and gadgets which make things super easy. You do need to do your research and invest in the right equipment, but start small and develop your confidence. It’s also probably a good idea to have someone else mind the kids, little helpers are a decidedly bad idea.
- It Makes Sense To Buy Old Stuff
Not only are you going to save a whole lot of money but you’re also getting something with character which is probably much better made than its modern equivalent. There are real bargains to be found on sites like Gumtree.
- Protect Your Home
