A New Paint Job

One of the most effective ways of updating the look of a room is by giving it a lick of paint. Both easy and relatively inexpensive, why not try something a little more bold and daring than the usual white and pale shades that you usually see in a living room? You could even try out a stylish two-tone scheme that gives you the chance to get creative and blend two colours of your choosing together.

Work With What You Have

Decorating doesn’t necessarily mean buying lots and lots of new things. Instead, you could try rearranging what you currently have to give your room an entirely new look. Start off by working out what the focal point of the room is – it could be a nice view from the window or a striking piece of art. Then, you can position your furniture so it points toward this point. Sometimes it actually helps to take a more minimalist approach and get rid of one or two things that you no longer have any need for.

Use Mirrors to Add Light

Making sure that the room is well-lit should be one of your main design priorities. Of course, you have plenty of options to do this with artificial or natural light, but another good way of adding light is with mirrors. While big pieces of art tend to be pretty expensive, mirrors are an affordable way of adding light and shimmer to your walls. As well as this, they also have the other natural advantage of making rooms appear bigger.

Add an Interesting Feature

Rather than just buying everything from the same store, you should try to add at least one interesting feature to the room. It could be a statue or some other kind of ornament. It could be an ornate bookshelf or glass coffee tables. This way, you are giving the room a much more personal touch and a sense that you have thought carefully about the decoration of the space.

Update Your Window

If you have some windows that are starting to look a little drab and dull, you can give them a bit of a refresh with some new roller blinds. When it comes to choosing the pattern, you have everything from simple floral styles to bold statement stripes to choose from. Complete the job with some fresh flowers or a new house plant on the windowsill.

Add a Bold Carpet or Rug

When it comes to design elements within a room, one of the most effective ways that you can make an instant impact is with a new carpet or rug. Carpeting is a great choice if you have kids as they can play with less of a risk of them getting hurt from falling over. Even if you decide to go for a more neutral choice, that doesn’t mean that it has to be boring. There are plenty of interesting textures and even ones that have a hint of colour. Otherwise, you could go for a large rug if you have a hardwood floor. There are plenty of jazzy choices that will make a big impact and instantly brightens up the room without you having to put much effort in at all.

Focus on Fabric

You don’t have to change your furniture every couple of years – new cushions or different fabric really can make all the difference. There are plenty of ready-made slip covers out there for sofas which add a burst of life if it is starting to look like it has seen better days. Bring the room together by copying the upholstery and using the pattern around the windows.

After reading through these tips, hopefully you have come away inspired and ready to give your living room a refresh. Just making one or two simple changes can really change your whole perspective of the entire room – and you don’t always have to spend a great deal of cash either.
