I love creating story stones and my kids do too, they’re a really simple thing to do that’s great for encouraging a bit of creativity. I’ve previously shared some sea themed story stones that are perfect for the summer and with the warmer weather approaching I thought it would be fun to make some camping story stones ready for a bit of an adventure.

You will need:
Stones
Pens – I used these ones but if you want to do detailed drawings then these have a finer tip
How to make them:
I started by trying out normal felt tips to see if these would work on the stones, honestly they don’t, the colours fade within a minute and I had to start again so if you want to make story stones it really is worth getting some proper chalk pens for it.
As these are camping story stones I drew a tent, a forest, an owl, a campfire, some stars and the sun and a rain cloud. Some other good ideas could be a compass, a river or kayak, a bear if you are in the US (less likely here in the UK, what’s our equivalent, a grass snake?!) and some marshmallows.
If you are drawing a story stone like the campfire one which involves more than one colour then give a few minutes between each layer to allow the pens to dry and then they are absolutely fine to do another layer of paint on top.
