I’ve been so excited to see that rock painting is becoming a big thing as it’s one of my kids favourite activities and I guess one of mine too! There are so many good things about this activity, it’s a chance to sit down and craft together, all ages can do it, it’s not expensive (I’ll share about some of my favourite materials with you) and there are loads of gorgeous rock painting ideas for kids that you can get inspiration from if you are feeling a bit stumped. As well as rock painting ourselves we also found a couple of painted rocks down at a beach near us a few weeks ago and my kids adored it so if you are planning on leaving your painted rocks out for people to find I can also confirm that finding them is just as much fun! Hopefully you’ll find all the rock painting ideas for kids here to get you started and having some creative fun!

Our favourite materials for rock painting with kids
We’ve tried out both the Chalkola and Posca markers and they both have their benefits. When you are using chalk pens to paint rocks you can do one colour on top of the other but do be aware that you need to give each colour a minute to dry before you do the next colour on top or the colours will blend and ugh, it just won’t look good. I have found through trial and error (I totally did the second colour too quickly) that if you make a mistake then both of these pens can normally be wiped away with babywipes if you get to them quickly. As my then two year old also decided to draw all over her hand I also found out that they can be cleaned up pretty easily too – thank goodness!
Of the two pens I think the Posca ones are probably my favourites because the thin tips mean that you can make your painted rocks more detailed. Worried about where to get all these rocks? If you don’t have a rocky garden or you want to do this activity with a large group of kids (or adults!) you can buy some rocks on amazon. There are also some really cool looking books on painting stones and rocks available like The Art of Stone Painting and Rock Art.
